Anyone have first hand knowledge ( an owner) of this monster disc changer? The specs look real good, 400 discs, hdmi output, upscaling to 720p/1080i, retailing under $350. Looks like a WOW and I'm hoping to get some real feedback.
TIA,
Erock

I have the model before, which is the exact same, but no HDMI or upconversion. In my store I do have the new model, and if I didn't already buy the old one, I would definitely get this one. The interface is a tad bit clunky, but picture quality is pretty nice for this price range, as well as sound quality.
I never drive faster than I can see, and besides that, its all in the reflexes.

I picked up the 995V a few days ago.

I've been happy with it so far. The picture looks good, a noticeable improvement over my old DVD player - even my wife says it looks "amazing" which is signifcant as she usually pooh-pooh's all my electronics.

The large portion of the remote control codes stay the say as former Sony multi-disc DVD players so I don't have to re-program all the macros in my Pronto (thank god!). I just need to add few more buttons to allow for easier browsing of all the titles.

The only two bad points I've noticed after two days of use:
1) The large majority of my DVD collection (which is only about 300) don't have titles on them. So, after loading them all the DVD player only recognized about 50 titles on it's own. However, the PS/2 Keyboard interface works very well so I've made good progress in manually typing in the names/genres/directors. This was pretty much what I expected but I know some people would be suprised so it's worth mentioning.
2) The player does an odd mix of tracking DVD's by slot number and content. For example, if I label the DVD in Slot One as "Akira" then replace it with another DVD the player will notice and will blank out the name of Akira. However, if I then move the DVD "Akira" to slot 380 the DVD player doesn't recognize it as being "Akira" - instead I have to re-enter all the information for it (which doesn't take much time).

SONY DVP-CX995V - Region Code Problem
---------------------------------------------------
Dear all,

I bought the SONY DVP-CX995V last week when I was in a trip to NY by job. It looks great (400 disc), but I was disappointed because here in Brazil the DVDs are region code 4, and the product became with region code 1.

Is it possible to change the region code for codefree?
I kindly appreciate if you tell me a way to do that once 90% of my DVDs are region 4.

Thanks and best regards,
Sue.

I own a cx-995v.... It has some good points a whole lot of bad.
Some may feel I am being overly hard... But this is the way I see it.

First the good :
1) 400 disks
2) Very nice picture and sound.
3) I was able to bargain and get it for $306
If you are expecting a 4) you are wrong.

Now the bad :
1) HUGE size.
I had to cut the backing of my equipment cabinet to make it fit.
2) When you power up the unit it starts to play a disk.
3) If this is the next Generation Explorer the first must have been designed by the Flintstones.
4) *** This is Big One ***
No place to put a RENTAL !
Forget about leaving the first few slots open.... ( unless you keep a flashlight handy ) I have another "single player" for rentals.
5) I hope you don't mind typing.
The idea of having any dvd player read the disk info is a Joke.
But to be fair this a problem not related to just this unit.
6) The "Jacket Picture" is smaller than a "Playing Card" on a 65" TV
7) The CX-995v can NOT be chained !

=============
With all of that said..... It is Cool to look at a list of 400 DVD's and play any one without getting up.

With new blue ray and other stuff around the corner I was willing to spend $350 for the hdmi mega player. I have two 985's all ready so I am commited to old technoligy for a few years anyway. I was excited to see the new model 995 at a local Best Buy. I grabbed one and zoomed home to check it out. Grabbing a four space shelf and some screws I made a home for it. My Sony amp already has the coax input used so for $15 bucks I picked up a fiber optic splitter made by LKG Industries, Rockford Ill in case you need one, so I could use one fibre amp input for two dvd's. Just don't turn on both dvd's at once. A strange lightning storm erupts from the speakers/amp if both come on at once. No harm though. Sound is perfect though. Perfect! As for the players operation it is just as Dom said. There is a high end $800 Sony 400 mega model not sold at mid level stores for those who want more control features....... Oh well....

I have a DVP-CX985V, but would guess it functions with same IR commands as the 995. With the remote in DVD mode, press the ENTER button (there are 2 ENTER buttons on the remote ... use the one near the top). When you press the correct ENTER botton, the disc number on the player goes to "-". Use the number keys to directly enter the desired disc slot number and then press same ENTER botton again. The player should go to the disc you entered and begin playing. This command string should work even if the player is starting to play another disc (no need to press STOP and wait forit to stop before entering commands to go to desired disc).

Let me know if this works.

Hello all,
I have just bought that DVD changer I have ever had but beware guys as there are a few anomalies with it..

Now admittedly most of the problems are just the differences between this and past Sony machines but I found a problem that caused me 21 hours of H.E.LL ..

So here I was, it was unboxed and installed and now I had to start loading the thing almost to capacity I might add (350 DVD’s) and I knew that I had to start labeling and adding them to various categories and folders but this was easy with the DVD cases in front of me and it only took about 5 hours.

Now for the problem... I turned the machine on a couple of days ago to show it off to a friend and it locked up. So what did I do? The same thing that any other man would do, I started pressing buttons, stop, pause, open door, and on and on I went..

Then I turned it off and then back on again... GONE!!! everything was gone all I had were 350 question marks so the machine had lost its memory of all my work and I have just spent 21 hours re-doing them all over, but this time without the cases handy, cause lets face it they all got tossed in a box.

So what I had to do was sit and watch the first few seconds (sometimes minutes) of each movie to see what was what and of course I knew about 75 percent but then there were those movies that play for about 15 minutes before they start to put anything on the screen, normally not bad but in this case it was .... Well you get the Idea...

So on finishing I realized that I had just gone through my HD Tivo finding hidden codes and switches that are built in but the manufacturer either doesn’t want you to know about them of perhaps they are just flukes of programming, either way if this Sony has a MASS DISTRUCT sequence it would have been nice of them to tell me DO NOT touch these buttons in this order or it DELETES everything which is what happened.

Well, that’s my story, sorry for going on but I was both wondering if this has happened to anyone else and also wanted to warn any unsuspecting owners of the Sony DVP-CX995V

Oh yeah, Happy New year to you all.
Doug.

Follow Up........

to anyone else who read about my first dealings with the Sony DVP-CX995V.

After a few days of dealing with this machine and treading very likely whenever picking up my remote control i have this to say.

Now that I have had a chance to play with the 400 disc exchanger I must admit to being quite a bit happier than before. Of course getting to know any machine such as this with so many features can be difficult at best but i kept at it.

I have realized that when first starting the machine there's nothing to do but wait. The disc exchanger is slow to respond at first and of course it wants to play a disc immediatley upon powering up and this is a feature that is hard to live with but i have learned to leave the player on and in the stopped possition, problem solved.

Learning to navigate around the many features is imperative and i must admit that it takes a while to get the hang of it and I have learned not to switch video from standard to Dynamic on the fly as the machine simply shuts down, yes turns off without warning.... Oh Sony...

Well thats about it, I still like the Sony DVP-CX995V but they should have taken more time to sort out a few of the weird problems before unloading this onto the market, it reminds me of Microsoft who always dump an unfinished product onto the unsuspecting public and then give us the service packs. Was Sony in a race? Was another company putting out a better Wheel?

All the best,
Doug.

Record this action to Button for Disc Slot #1:

1. DVD: Stop
2. DVD: Display
3. DVD: Enter
4. DVD: "1"
5. DVD: Enter
6. DVD Display

Repeat for Buttons representing slots 2-5 substituting correct number at step 4.

Two things:

1. When you turn it on, it will start reading the disc where you cut it off & you can't park it on an empty slot. Not a deal killer, but not a positive feature either.
2. There is some controversy over whether, when you lose power, you lose all your data entry or not. Both seem to have happened to various users per AVS forum.

I haven't lost power, so don't know my personal answer. For me, except for #1 above, it's a great box, beautiful picture (DVI) and has a good remote.

I originally purchased this MegaChanger and afterward read all about the frustration that some of the users had. You could imagine how I felt post purchase I just had the machine a few days and was already regretting it.

So what I did was spend the time to load up the disc info in the Disc Explorer, then created a spreadsheet of all the DVD listings. With the spreadsheet I sorted the genre by color and keep the sheet on the cocktail table (for reference purposes only).

My buddy bragged about his Harmony 659 so I borrowed it to see what it could do, and I was very satified at the possibility of this remote. I was able to set this guy up and import my DVD listing to the remote (a la Pronto but without the pics , which by the way surprised me completely -it doesn't take much). The Harmony 659 also uploaded my TV listings to the remote (sweet).

I've heard alot about the Pronto remote and wanted it badly, but I just could not justify the cost, instead I bought a Harmony 880 (with $30 rebate at Amazon) and had it programmed similar to the recommendation for the Pronto.

This Harmony remote also allowed me to input my entire DVD collection to the Remote. It sorts the DVD listing alphabetically. Except this guy did not support uploading the TV lising (Boooo!)

When I start the "Watch a DVD" activity (which starts up the Sony DVP) I have the remote programmed to pause for 20 seconds then send a Stop command, this brings DVP to the Standby screen at start up (simple enough).

I previously had it setup to send a Stop command then Folder command which put me in the Disc Explorer screen. The problem was that when the Sony DVP is in Disc Explorer mode the commands are different than when in StandBy mode and when you load a disc from the DVD listing on the remote the remote sends the commands and the DVP tries to load the active disk from the Disc Explorer screen. (Not good.)

At this point we don't even use the Sony Disc explorer. We search the remote for the DVD and load it from there. When I get a new DVD I update the DVD spreasheet I created and reload it back to the remote via Logitech's website.

I was kinda frustrated when I first got the Sony DVP CX-995V (after reading the negative posts) but the Harmony remote was able to tame the Sony so I am happy with the purchase for now at least.

The Harmony 880 remote is NOT perfect and I'm still working out the kinks in it but at a minimum my family can run the MegaChanger without trouble. I don't have little ones (anymore) so we don't really need the pics like the Pronto.

I hope this helps.
