I have the following set-up:- Sony LCD TV KDL-V40A12U, Denon DHT-500 SD Home Cinema and SkyHD.
I am awaiting delivery of the above Kameleon 6.1 URC 8206 and am told that it will work with 'anything'. Having had a look at the online manual, I am a little concerned as :-
a) Sony is shown generically but when I sought the specific code online it only showed US referenced models.
b) Kameleon do not seem to recognise Home cinema packages, only DVD, Tuner, VCR separates. How do they deal with Home cinemas and what device button would you need to press?
c) They show Sky+ and Thomson, but not Sky HD which is manufactured by Thomson. Anyone out there use the Kameleon 6.1 with Sky HD?

Can anyone allay my fears? As you can see from my questions, I am an absolute 'Newbie' so apologies.

@billbirchall:

Don't worry, the Kameleon 6 URC 8206 will opperate al your devices:

- Sony LCD TV KDL-V40A12U: please setup TV code 1651

-How do they deal with Home cinemas?

The URC-8206 sees you're Denon as a Home Cinema Receiver with a DVD player.
For the Receiver part: setup Tuner/AMP code 1460
For the DVD part: setup DVD code 0634 (1634 should also work)

I also noticed you have a Sky HD, you lucky [censored]!
The Thomson HD receiver you got, is it by any chance the new DSI-8215?

You can contact OFA customer support to download the new setup code for Sky HD into you're URC-8206, however, wouldn't be surprised if the SAT code 1175 (which is already built in the Kameleon for the Sky+) would also work. When you have received the Kameleon, can you let us know if 1175 does work?

Thanks very much for your response. Yes, Dutch Uncle I do have the DSI-8215. I am unfortunately not having much luck setting up my 8206. I have set up the codes as suggested but apart from 'off' and occasionally 'on' and moving channels within TV (which I rarely use as I am on Sky) nothing seems to respond, as it should.

I believe that I do have a messy set up and maybe Kameleon cannot deal with it.
Firstly the function button of the Home Cinema remote does not seem to be available, under DVD/Tuner Amp codes. As the sound for SkyHD comes through the Video2 function, I cannot access this, which is pretty fundamental.
Another problem is that TV(including built in Freeview) is on AV2 but SkyHD is on AV5. I need to be able to move between AV's but cannot seem to do so. Also the guide button does not seem to respond, which means that I cannot select a program for viewing/recording/playback.
I know that I am a Newbie, but there must be many more like me. I also was not impressed when contacting OneForAll for help, to receive an auto reply saying give them a FEW DAYS to reply!!
If you can offer any help I would be extremely grateful, as at the moment, I am pulling large chunks of hair out of my scalp!! cherylee, you say that you have set up your Home Cinema, can you please tell me how?

Regards to you both

I have
set up the codes as suggested

Meaning TV/1651 for your Sony TV?

but apart from 'off'
and occasionally 'on' and moving channels within
TV (which I rarely use as I am on Sky) nothing
seems to respond, as it should.

Isn't On/Off a single function in that TV? If ON works at all, it's the right code. If it sometimes doesn't work, maybe the TV needs a long press for ON, or there is some other such issue.

That remote and setup code use rather complicated five digit EFC numbers for any special functions that are missing from the base setup code. The remote has enough learning memory that you might find it easier to learn missing signals from the original remote than program them by EFC number. But if you tell us the missing functions, someone can compute their EFC numbers and tell you (if it isn't in the user documentation) how to bind a function to a button by EFC number.

I believe that I do have a messy set up and maybe
Kameleon cannot deal with it.

The Kameleon can handle quite complex setups. But programming it is not obvious and probably not well documented.

Firstly the function button of the Home Cinema
remote does not seem to be available, under DVD/Tuner
Amp codes.

I don't understand what you mean.

As the sound for SkyHD comes through
the Video2 function, I cannot access this, which
is pretty fundamental.

I think I'm missing something there as well. The remote has "volume punch through" and other methods that can be used to control vol of one device while in the mode of another.

Another problem is that TV(including built in
Freeview) is on AV2 but SkyHD is on AV5. I need
to be able to move between AV's but cannot seem
to do so.

Confusing again. Are "AV2" and "AV5" inputs to the Sony TV or to what? I'm sure we can find the EFC number to switch inputs (step to next input) for the Sony. Probably even the EFC number to jump to a specific input.

Don't worry Bill, you will see, it will work!

At this moment you are still used to the Key labels of your original remotes and not very familiar with your new 6 in 1 remote, so in the beginning you have to understand how the Kameleon works and than you can fine tune it. After I while you will love this remote. I had the same when I bought my first OFA (in 1999 :-) ) when I later bought a new amplifier and looked at the remote of the AMP, I decided to leave that remote in the plastic seal and just use my beloved OFA, I never had the unpack the original remote!

Now let's try a few things. Please note that I need feedback in order to be able to help. It is very important to know if the setup codes do work (partially) and only need fine tuning for missing keys or if the setup went wrong and you don't get a respond at all. Let's try the Denon first:

1) Press the Audio Device Key (setup code 1460)

First try to control the Volume on the Denon. Then try the input selection. I understand you have a key called "Function" on your Denon remote. This key is also on the Kameleon, however, it has the more logical name "Input Select":

1) With the scroll key you can toggle between the "number" and the "input" screen.

2) If you select the input screen (above the numbers is written "input"), you will also find under key 9 a "Sel" key for the Input Selection.

3) Now press this key several times and see if you can select inputs on your Denon.

Then put a DVD in the Denon and start the disk. Select the "DVD" device key on your Kameleon (setup code 0634) and try several functions (e.g. "Stop", "Play", Menu"). Does it work?

- The Sky HD

Does your Thomson DSI-8515 work on SAT code 1175 or doesn't give that code any reaction? Please try Channel Up/Down, number keys, Stop, Play (use scroll button to select the PVR functions for the Sky HD) and let me know, thanks!

Sorry Guys, I rushed this off without realise you had fed back!! I told you I was a Newbie! I will get back to you when I have digested you vey helpful info.

I seem to have made a little progress by using SEARCH. I can now switch on the TV and switch it off! I also seem to have most of the functionality of the SkyHD remote but only when I am in it. i.e I cannot move seamlessly from TV to Sky (presumably because of the need to move from AV2 to AV5. The Home Cinema is still a mess. I can use DVD when the Home Cinema is on, but cannot switch it on using Kameleon!! Once again this is probably due to the fact that I have the Home Cinema, 'optically' connected to Sky, in order to obtain the high quality sounds from HD. However that means switching on the Home Cinema using Video 2, which requires a function key which I do not have on Kameleon. In fact, could I set up the device for Video 2 ? Do I try to set it up under video, even though I do not have one? Once again cherylee, over to you if you have set up your Home Cinema.
Sorry I am bombarding you with this but I badly need assistance.

Regards

OK, first the Sky HD. Please don't try to 'fix' three different devices at the same time, let's do the setup one by one, otherwise you 'll only create confusion (Dutch Uncle is already a bit confused).

Question: The selection from AV2 to AV5, that is not on the Sky HD, but on the Denon Home Cinema the "Video2" input (for sound) and on your Sony TV the "AV5" input (for picture), correct?

So do I understand correctly you can operate the Sky HD perfectly with SAT code 1175 and that you only need to know how to do the input selection on your Denon and on your Sony TV?

The latest is that I can switch the TV on/off, switch channels and incr/reduce volume. So Device1 being the TV seems OK.

Device 2, being the Home Cinema is puzzling.I cannot switch on this device although I have set up DVD and Amp/Tuner and can now with your advice change functions, but only after switching on using the old Denon remote!! When testing the device, I can switch off using Amp/Tuner but I cannot switch it on again.

Device 3 is the same as for Home Cinema, in that it has good functionality when on but can only switch on with old remote. Kameleon will not switch to SkyHD.

I think that the problem with Device 2 the Home Cinema is that because it is optically connected to the Sky HD box and it's sound is driven through Video 2 Function, the Home cinema automatically starts in Video 2 NOT Amp/Tuner or DVD. It therefore will not start! Somehow I need to get Video 2 programmed to start on Kameleon.

Regarding Device 3-Sky HD. This expects to start in AV5 but the TV is in AV2. Once again it will not start

The Sony TV I have has AV's 1-6 and 2 is used for Freeview and 5 for Sky HD.

Summarising-
1)I need to be able to start the Home Cinema in Video 2 functionality.

2)I need to be able to move from TV AV2 to Sky HD AV5 so that the Sky HD functionality, (which is programmed in, successfully) can work.

If either of you can solve this I will be forever grateful!!

Regards

Bill

ARGGHHH!!!

(1, 2, 3, come on Dutch Uncle, try to calm down at bit)

Sorry folks!

Dear Bill,

Not sure if I understand you correctly:

"Regarding Device 3-Sky HD. This expects to start in AV5 but the TV is in AV2. Once again it will not start"

???

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that having select the RIGHT or WRONG AV input on your SONY TV will Power On or Power OFF your Thomson Sky box by miracle, does it?

If I'm not mistaken, the only difference is that if the Thomson is Powered On an your SONY TV is on AV5, you can watch Sky TV and if you have select another input or channel than AV5 on your TV, you can't see Sky TV, correct?

In that case, please note that "can't see Sky because my TV is not on the right input" not the same as "my Thomson box won't Power on", the solution is also different, instead of "Power On the Thomson" the solution is "Select AV5 on my Sony TV".

OK, let's try selecting inputs on your Sony TV:

On the original TV remote, Sony RM-ED001, under the "Analog" key and above digit key "3", you have a key with two symbols: "Input Select" and "Text Hold" key, haven't you?

And if you press this key several times, you toggle between AV1, AV2,.., AV6 (AV2 gives you Freeview, AV5 gives you Sky TV). Am I correct?

And if you setup on your Kameleon TV code 1651 and then press the AV/input key (it's in TV mode the key under digit key "9"), it will allow you toggle between the AV inputs, doesn't it?

Now, now Dutch Uncle. I apologise if I am getting you to tear your hair out, but we are getting there!

I can now switch on the TV and using the AV key move to AV5 and thus switch on SKY HD. Yippee!!!! Thanks for that! A pity that I cannot get straight to Sky HD, but lets not be churlish.

I now need to resolve the final part of your question i.e. 'So do I understand correctly you can operate the Sky HD perfectly with SAT code 1175 and that you only need to know how to do the input selection on your Denon and on your Sony TV?'

My earlier statement is still I feel the crux, i.e.'I think that the problem with Device 2 the Home Cinema is that because it is optically connected to the Sky HD box and it's sound is driven through the Video 2 Function. The Home cinema automatically starts in Video 2 NOT Amp/Tuner or DVD. It therefore will not start! Somehow I need to get Video 2 programmed to start on Kameleon.'

You are a very patient person and I sincerely appreciate the time that you have spent on my problem. If you can find a solution to the last part, you will be a hero!

regards

Bill

Don't worry Bill,

Still got my hair (even the grey ones)...

Good to hear that you can select the AV inputs on your TV!

In fact, I can already tell you that you can program the Kameleon to go directly to the AV5 input with help of "discrete inputs" and you can create macros that Power Up all your devices and switch direct to the right input, however, thats the advanced stuff, we first will finish the basic setup and then I'll come back on this, OK?

Let's now setup the Denon:

Please note that "will not start" is a bit confusing for me, not sure if you mean "Power On the Denon" or "select the right input" (video2) or just "watch & hear Sky TV" and that makes it quite difficult to help.

However, I can imagine that if you just received your first universal remote and see the posts on this forum, we are confusing you even more... (sorry!)

Unlike your TV remote, I 'm not very familiar with your Denon remote (can you find a modelnumber on your Denon remote, e.g. a RC-number? If you can, please post the modelnumber), so I have to ask you which functions you press on the Denon in order to tell you how to find or program these functions on your Kameleon.

1) To switch (Power) On and Off your Denon with the Denon remote, do you have on that Denon remote:

a) a single "Power" key that allows you to Power On and Off both

b) two different keys, a "Power On" and a "Power Off" key

c) none of the above (please explain what you have to press)

BTW The Kameleon has pre programmed the "Power Off" command for Denon Surround Receivers / Home Cinema, so if you press "Power" in Audio Mode, it will probably allow you to "Power Off" your Denon, but not "Power On" or toggle Power modes. But don't worry, we can re-programm these settings :-)

2) Input selection

To select inputs like "DVD", "Tuner", "Video1", "Video2", etc, does your Denon remote has

a) a single key (probably called "Function") that allows you to toggle between the various inputs

b) for every input it's own key, e.g. "DVD", "Tuner", "Video1", "Video2"

Please let me know, thanks!

Thanks for sticking with me!
First of all the Denon Remote control reference is RC-973. Answering your questions:-
POWER
1) I power the Denon by using,it's 2 Power buttons, the right hand one is ON and the Left-hand OFF.

INPUT SELECTION
2)It has a single function button, which allows you to access; TV, DVD,Tuner, Video1 and Video2 (not necessarily in that order.) and I have used this successfully with Kameleon.

I hope that this gives you all you need.

Thanks again for you help. I feel that if we can crack the Denon problem of not being able to power up, I will have the basic setup. The thought of Macros and discrete numbers, in the future, is very exciting.

Regards

Bill

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the info about your Denon RC-973 remote.

Basicly the problem you have controling the Denon is this:

- your Denon has 2 keys for Power On and Off
- the Kameleon has at the moment of writing 1 Power key (which works for "Power Off" if I'm not mistaken)

Solution: program the second and missing Power key (= "Power On") on your Kameleon.

There are two ways to program extra functions on your Kameleon:
- Learning
- Key Magic (in the manuals of US remotes often called Key Move)

The Learning is well explained in the manual, can't do it better here. Key Magic is also well explained, however, it doesn't list the code numbers you need, you have to ask OFA customer support because every setup code has for every function it own numbers.

The learning methode seems therefore the easier solution, however, I would recommend to use "Key Magic" instead, because there is a good change that your Denon contains a hidden gem and if it does, the Kameleon is capable to reveal it with help of "Key Magic".

Some Denon's have a single Power key that allows to Power On & Off with the same key (we call this "Power Toggle"). Some (including your Denon) have separate On & Off keys. However, many Denon Home Cinema's support both methods. Lets find out if your Denon also does.

First you need the codes (often called "function codes" or "Key Magic codes") for Power in Audio code 1460:

- Power Off: 67453
- Power On: 67517
- Power (On/Off toggle): 67513

"Power Off" (=67453) is already programmed on your Kameleon, "Power On" is still missing, for "Power" (toggle) we still have to find out if your Denon supports it.

As mentioned above, programming "Key Magic" is explained in your Kameleon manual, however, it is also possible to test codes without programming a key.

If your are in Audio mode (important! it won't work when you are in DVD mode), you can press the "Magic key" (or hat) once and let go (don't press it long, the rabbit has to stay in the hat) and then enter the code number. At the moment you enter the last digit, the Kameleon will send the IR command that code represents.

Please make sure your Kameleon is pointed at your Denon when you enter the last digit, you can hold down the last digit if you want to, the Kameleon will send the IR command untill you release the button.

Bill, can you test all three Power commands on your Denon? Please note that it is quite easy to make a mistype while testing, so if a code doesn't seem to work, just try it again and hold down the last digit longer. Or program the codes on keys and then test the keys (please see the "Key Magic" chapter in the Kameleon manual).

I have as requested tested the 3 codes. Power off: 67453 works and so does Power on: 67517 but Power On/Off 67513 does not seem to do anything. Do I now need to program the Power on to another key, if so any suggestions which one would be most suitable?
