So a customer has a dead Pioneer PDP-5041HD, the LED codes indicated a dead digital video assy and/or power supply. We have a parts account with Pioneer so I ordered the parts. I opened up the chassis, installed the parts and both the red and green LED's on the front panel are lit, after a few seconds the green LED goes out, when I turn the TV on, the red and green LED's burn steady again.

The service manual indicates the the "trap switch" has been tripped and must be reset. The trap switch is a nice little dip switch that, when tripped" locks out the TV unil it is reset. The trap switch is part of the HDMI HDCP ciruictry, keeps people from tampering with the content protection.

I tried the procedure that describes resetting with the remote control but the TV is still locked. The service manual describes using RS-232C commands to reset the tv (needs a $75 part) to use RS232. I have no experience with RS-232 so I would not know what to do if I bought the part.

I really kinda f'ed this one up as I have never encountered a "trap switch" and hope I can resolve this without sending the set to a service center.

Any ideas? what kind of software do I need to do RS-232C?

What is the code set you need to send? Essentially, RS-232 is a form of bidirectional communication. Generally, there is some set of commands that need to be sent to the unit according to a predefined form and at some data rate. A terminal emulation program such as hyper-terminal can be set up as your communicating device. You would need to know the communication parameters ( baud rate, data length, stop bits, parity ) and the structure of the command you need to send. All these posts on RS-232 and a précis on my computer waiting to be edited.

The svc manual says I need to send TSN and CTM commands to the panel. There are five pages of commands listed in the RS232 section of svc manual but nothing about the paramaters. The commands need to be sent using a "special communications device" perhaps those paramaters are included with that part?

So if I use Hyper-terminal, how do I set those paramaters?

I believe the parameters for Pioneer are 9600,8 bits,1 stop bit,No parity, though on older models the baud rate is 4800. When you open up hyper-terminal you can set these parameters in the setup screen once you select the type of communication (serial ). You may need to have a null modem adaptor available as well. You would then type in the CTN and TSM commands. You may need additonal bytes to these commands. Typical setup commands look like this 02h**ADJ03h. However, these commands come from the Pioneer serial communications protocol and yours I hope come from the service protocol which could be different. If you send it to me I'll translate it for you. Or perhaps this information is all that you need to do it yourself.

Go to Windows Accessories, select Communication, select Hyperterminal.

When you open Hyperterminal it will ask you to name the connection you will be using. Make up a name for the connection.

It will ask for the type of connection. Select Com if you are doing a serial connection.

At this point it will ask for the serial parameters.

That's all there is to it.

Good luck

Hope this helps,

Did you ever solved this problems? I'm having the same issue right now. I just opened a Pioneer PDP-6070HD to stick an emmiter inside and forgot about this thread when I tried to test the emmiter with the rear cover off and now the plasma is locked.
I'm always right. The only time I was wrong was the time that I thought, that I was wrong.

I have also fallen into this trap. Read service manual. Get the Green and Red LEDS
lit on the Plasma Panel. The PDP panel will turn on the media receiver when pressing
the on button from remote or on/standby soft touch button.
Read service manual, know how to use Hyperterminal. The media box needs a key
sequence to get the SR+ serial input switched to the RS232 Conenctor. I do nto have the remote for the media receiver or the PDP panel only an older Pioneer TV
remote. The service manual also states getting into factory service mode will
disable trap. Does anyone how to get into the factory service mode from remote?
Basically how to reset the trap switch...
Thanks.

Just exactly why did you power the set on with the TV apart?

Ask Pedro (the poster flcusat above your post) I sent him the manual and he figured it out.

Will look for it on the IP area.
I bought the TV and believe someone tried to service it with the back off.
I believe it may be in trap mode due to the LED Red and Green on. It may also be
non working panel? If i press the on/standby button on the panel it will power
up the media receiver. Appears to be partially working.
Thanks.
