I am considering the IR543, but the manual:

[Link: x10.com]

mentioned only 4 modules can be controlled by the push buttons.

Is there such as limit with IR ? i.e. I have 16 modules on a hosue code I would like to control with IR and the IR543. Is this possible?

The IR543 can "locally" control up to 8 units -- four at one time. There is a switch to toggle between 1,2,3, and 4 and 5,6,7, and 8.

Using IR, you can control up to 16 units (one house code) without regard to how the unit is physically set.

There is an "expanded" versin of the IR543, which can control multiple house codes.

Contrary to what DrJoe has stated, the IR543 I have can control only 10 units using IR remote. There are no IR codes for units 11,12,13,14,15,16. Unit 10 is controlled by key 0 on the remote. This is stated in the IR543 manual.
Also as David Mark mentioned here:

there is a problem with the IR543AH bright and dim functions.

The IR543 can control codes 11 through 16 your remote has the problem that it can not send them. If you had a PC programmable remote like a URCMX or Pronto or taught your remote with one of these, you could control 11 through 16. I have not heard of any problems (and since we sell most of them in the US I suspect I would) or have had any problems with bright or dim on my AH model.

Contrary to what hiker says, I was correct (thanks, Bill).

I have a Pronto computer programable remote -- of the type Bill mentions. In the files section on this board, you can download X10 device files (ccf files) for the Pronto. I have downloaded such a file.

I just confirmed -- I can control a PA011 wall outlet's X10 controlled plug with the plug's dial set on any number from 1-16. I specifically tried #15 and #16 as well as #2, #6, and #10. It doesn't matter what the hard button on the IR543 is set at (1-4 or 5-8).

take care,

Joe

I have both URC8811 and MX-500 and I can't find any buttons that will allow me to select X10 codes 11-16. I have IR-Clone-MX. Is there a file somewhere that I could use? Or are the Pronto files convertible to files usuable in IR-Clone-MX?

What you would have to do is create a device or use the standard X10 file with the MX 500 and then teach the soft (LCD) buttons commands for 11 through 16. I am not sure about clone MX but most programs will allow you to import hex commands. You can do this by downloading pronto edit and then one of the IR files with 11 through 16. You then double click on these buttons which will allow you to get to the hex format. Again I am not sure of the particulars of clone program, but I gather hex codes for other remotes all the time using this method.

Thanks Bill E.
I used my URC8811 and entered advanced codes for 11-16.

Then taught the MX-500. I've had the IR543 for years and until now thought it was limited to 10 X10 devices. :)

The URC8811 is a UEI one-for-all remote, no? It is very likely that there are "extended" codes would work --

Do some searched and/or post over on the Oner for All/ radio Shack forum. www.hifi-remote.com would also be a good resource.

A quick search provided this info for the One For All remotes:

MUTE should actually turn everything off.
Use POWER to turn all the lights on.
Use the number keys to select a device, then use
CH+ to turn the selected device on, and
CH- to turn it off.
If the selected device is a light, use
VOL+ to brighten it, and
VOL- to dim it.

If any of your devices are set to unit codes 10 thru 16, use these buttons to select them:

10 - zero
11 - rewind
12 - play
13 - f.forward
14 - record
15 - stop
16 - pause

From a quick survey of the Home Theater Master Remote forum, you will have to teach it the additional buttons.

Thanks DrJoe I got it working.
Bad X10 instructions from X10 company, but I'm glad the IR543 has the added capability of controlling 11-16. If you look at instructions for X10 remote here:
[Link: x10.com]
page 22 states this:
"The IR543 can only control 10 Modules (1-9 plus 0=10)"
