As I said before - my 890 works about 98% the way I want it to with my equipment setup.

Occasionally I have to unplug/replug the RF extender and rerecognize - since the last update I've had to do it 1 time only.

I do not know if the "4 device workaround" is still present in the RF Extender but that was a workaround for the Java software I believe not really an RF extender problem.

My wife can now use the 890. What more of an endorsement do you want????

Mine works without much problems whatsoever.

I'm wondering if someone can try something.. next time you have to reset your rf repeater...instead of unplugging it, try holding down the connect button continuosly (about 15 seconds) until the light comes on solid for a while, then rapidly blinks, then goes off... that is supposed to reset it.

Will the remote then sync up with it?

I have had the 895 (European version of the 890) for a week now and am now in the process of sending it back for a refund. The main problem is that I have only got it to work with one of my devices - a Sony TV and the only way to set it up is via the web site. The biggest problem is that I have to disable Norton Firewall and Norton Anti Virus to communicate with the Harmony setup web site. It would appear that setting up the remote is incompatible with having Norton on your PC.
I spoke to an IT consultant friend and he said that my PC was at risk from viruses while I was setting up the remote and tonight Harmony also confirmed that I was. I have decided that it is not worth the risk and hence I am trying to return the remote.

I've got an 895 too, and I run Norton Antivirus as well. I've had no problems setting up my remote and do not need to disable Norton, both co-exist and simply work as they should. Cannot comment on the other Norton products except to say that I had to ask a customer of mine to change to another system as Norton Firewall would not allow her to connect to a web server within her home network regardless of what was done with Norton. I would suspect the problem lies with Norton, not the remote.

Another call to Harmony has resulted in getting my 895 to now work. The problem was solved by running MSCONFIG and de-selecting the Norton startup programs from the list. This is not ideal but at least the remote is now working. Obviously the Harmony 895 is not compatible with the Norton security on my computer.

Okay, here's my story. I bought a new HD tv and moved my other components into a nearby closet (tivo/cd player/dvd player/Amp/cable box). I purchased an 890 and have been in hell ever since. I've spent hours upon hours with support (who were all very nice and helpful) but I'm on my third remote and the thing doesn't work as it's supposed to. I couldn't connect the first two, for any length of time (or at all) to the extender. I finally have one that quickly connected to the extender, yet the range is almost nonexistent (something that happened when I got the other extender hooked up briefly).

I have to be within three feet of the extender for it to work, which kinda defeats the purpose.

If anyone has any ideas that might help get some range to this thing, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

Newbee and would really like to understand how it works before i initiate the purchase?

I have norton on my computer and no problems with my 880.. I think it pretty much uses the same software and goes to the same site.

You may need to setup your firewall to permit the application to get internet access. There is very little reason to fully disable your firewall, it should be pretty easy to setup. I am surprised your tech friend didn't give you that option as that's kind of like saying you have to remove your door from it's hinges to walk through it... true but not the best solution by far.

Also if you turn your antivirus off for short periods you are not at very much risk for getting viruses if you are not doing anything that might bring a virus in. It's true they might port scan you and try to break in through your unprotected connection but it's pretty unlikely. Despite some companies reporting unprotected pcs getting infected I have personally setup PCs just to test this, after 24 hours they all passed full scans with no issues.

You are far more likely to aquire a nasty bit of software by accidentally clicking a banner or installing a bundled program than by leaving your firewall off for a few minutes.

Harmony really messed up with the 880 and 890, what a shame, they are sweet looking remotes.

If you came to this forum looking for help on making your decision to buy either of these remotes then just look at this thread and numerous others! The remotes have serious issues. So if you decide not to heed all the posts about charger problems, Sucky Range etc and still buy one because it looks so sleek, then you should have no complaints later when the remotes functionality is not what you expected.

Firmware 4.5
Software 6.2.5

On the extender I think it's 1.5.

It's supposed to work the "Z Wave" RF devices, but right now does not. Harmony says they are working on it
