What are the advantages of this 890 vs. the 880 and is it worth the xtra cost? I have seen on various sites that people are having problems with the setup via Logitech's website and was wondering if anyone would/could elaborate on this.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

33 views and no replies yet ????? I sure would like to purchase this remote for its versatility but I would like to know of any unforeseen problems also. Any people out there with this remote, I sure could use your input.

As far as I know the only difference is that the 890 allows RF. Thus, it can transmit through walls. There have been a lot of problem with this device and the european version (895) was even removed from their web site. However, I have heard many positive remarks lately and it is back on the web site so I have ordered it now.

Regarding their web setup, it seems a bit limiting and annoying. You can try it out on their web site. However, it seems to be good enough for me :-D Maybe I change my mind when I get mine ;)

Thanks for the reply. I ordered one myself so I guess we'll have to see how it performs. I'll let you know.

I am also trying to decide whether to get the 890 or not because of all the negative views on this forum. FM53 Can you provide your inputs regarding your experience with the 890. Would welcome any inputs from everybody.
thanks in advance

FM 35 - I too want to buy the 890. I've wanted to buy it since last week but have beein waiting for Logitech to update the Firmware which was suppposed to have happened on March 21st. But no one can confirm that they did indeed update it.
I currently use a 569 and I am very satisfied with it. Only thing is the line of sight to my Cable Box and DVD Player(s) is blocked by an armchair that my wife will not permit me to move. Thus I thought the 890 would be ideal - but again, no one has been able to cnfirm that my planned positioning of the RF Transmitter on top of the armchair would actually work.
By the way highdeflifestyle.com has adiscount coupon RM 890 for the 890.
I am dying to use it.

Why not just use an IR repeater? This would work with any remote. You can get a hot link pro for < $100.

I had another question, do we need to buy a RF extender or something else along with the 890? or does it come with it...

Opine I shall.

I like my 890. For a while, the RF module and the remote just didn't work well together - REALLY annoying. There are a few remaining issues since the last update - I have to reach around the entertainment center and occasionally unplug the RF receiver to reset. I wish the repeat-rate were higher but that might be my other equipment - it's adjustable on the website but not enough so far.

I think the website/java customization stuff is cool - certainly not as fast as a dedicated piece of local software but it's certainly useable and does everything I need it to do.

For those not in the know: The remote communicates with the RF Receiver via (you guessed it, RF). The RF Receiver then beams your selected commands to your equipment baking away inside your cabinet just like a regular IR repeater would.

You can select the equipment you want controlled via the RF Receiver and which equipment you want to control directly via the remote via IR.

I have purchased 3 sets of 890s and I need them to overlap (ie: I need multiple remotes to control a single RF receiver, and one remote to control multiple RF reivers. The web site would not allow me to set up in that way. I got an error message telling me to rename my RF receivers because they are named the same, even though I named them defferently during setup.
There is no help desk phone number that I could find, so I had to fire off an email to their help desk. Return time is listed as 24Hrs so I will update you tomorrow

The phone number is on the website.

Unless you're planning to use the remote in another room you can just get an IR repeater and skip the entire RF extender problem altogether.

Unfortunately, I have equipment scattered over 4 rooms (don't ask) So I thought having 3 RF remotes would solve the problem. I decided to go with Harmony over the Universal Remote because they look sleeker and more modern.
Each remote is communicating with it's RF receiver ok, but I need them to cross-communicate. Hopefully the Logitech tech support will help me do that.

Just hung up with Tech Support, they said that for now, it's only 1 remote to 1 RF receiver, they are working on having them cross-communicate, but it's at least a couple of months into the future.
The system allowed me to input 1 remote and 2 receivers, but did not allow the update of the remote (which is the final step)
