Is this a TSU9600 with an old rotary (one with 8 little knobs on the wheel), or the updated rotary (lots of radial lines on the wheel) ?

I think this waking up is caused by slight movements of the rotary wheel (which cannot be disabled as a wake-up source).

I have the old one as well but I can confirm that the problem stopped after going back to the previous firmware version. As such, I don't think it is a hardware issue.

It is not a hardware issue. It is a software issue and I suspect that it is with the new onWake capability but cannot confirm. Belgium is having trouble repeatedly reproducing the problem. I do not have a config with an exact sequence of steps for repro.

If any of you do, I'd love to hear from youl

Have had the same problem, mine would wake itself up on the table and also in the charging cradle and stay on for hour after hour, reversion to the older firmware seems to have fixed it.

I should have looked here much earlier as I was getting very frustrated with it, shaking it hard to try and get it to switch the screen off, I assumed the ball bearing for the pick up sensor was somehow getting stuck.

Thanks, Adam.

I guess you are wondering if there is a specific series of commands that would have been used before the remote was left by itself on a table. I wouldn't be able to say myself. I actually went back to the previous firmware to get rid of the problem and was hoping that it would have been fixed by now. It seems not...

I believe the problem is more prevalent with 7.1.21. No fix available that I am aware of.

I have been experiencing this problem for some time now. However, there is a new twist that I am not sure has been documented here yet. The odd time when my remote wakes up, it issues and IR command as well. I'll be sitting there and all of a sudden my movie will start to fast foward or rewind. I'll be like WTF and look at remote and it will be on, just sitting there all by itself on my coffee table or up on the mantle. It does not matter if the remote is in the cradle or not.

Perhaps these remotes are getting too advanced and they are starting to become sentient and developing a sense of humour ;)

I just noticed one thing. My 9600 started to turn off and on in a more and more rapid way. It had not been touched for several hours. In the end about once in a minute. Then suddenly it turns on my lights one step. I'm using Lutron Grafik Eye via IR and I have the + and - on buttons but also on the scroll wheel. When I moved the scroll wheel just at fraction of mm the off's and on's just stopped.
I have also noticed that in the beginning ( maybe 3 months ago) the scroll wheel action was a bit more rapid. Have not find any reasons yet for the more sluggish behavior. A trace maybe to the problem, or are the several problems with the same symptoms.

I recently purchased a new TSU9600 which has yet to exhibit this issue of the screen activating on its own. My original TSU9600 exhibits this behavior without fail so long as it's not docked in the cradle. Take this evening for example. Both remotes are running the same firmware and configuration file. Both are sitting on the couch next to me as I watch Monday Night Football. Both on the same page of said configuration file. My original TSU9600 after the first few minutes sitting there activates the screen on its own. Once it goes to sleep the screen activates on its own yet again a few minutes later. Eventually it begins happening repeatedly getting stuck in a loop. The screen activates on its own. A few seconds later the screen goes out per the settings of my configuration file and exactly 4 seconds later the screen activates again. It repeats this cycle over and over again until I dock the remote. I leave it docked for a few minutes, then undock the remote. The screen stays off for a while eventually activating again on its own. Note that with the remote docked the screen has yet to ever activate on its own. In contrast the brand new TSU9600 I recently purchased has yet to have the screen activate on its own. The clear difference between the two remotes is that my new TSU9600 has the updated scroll wheel used by both the TSU9400 and TSU9800. My original remote of course does not.

That being said, this certainly appears to be a hardware issue. My original TSU9600 has exhibited this behavior since I first starting using it. This goes all the way back to when I was beta testing the remote and editor for Philips prior to the remote even being available for purchase. One thing I've always suspected is that perhaps the remote is activating the screen on its own, because it thinks the scroll wheel has moved even though it hasn't. Moving the scroll wheel forces the screen to activate even if it is not implemented per the particular page you are on. Well by complete accident I have on one occassion so far witnessed the remote registering that the scroll wheel is moving even though it isn't per actions being carried out on the selected page. In this case, the remote was sitting next to me on the couch. It just so happened to be on my "Activities" page which I had recently programmed to allow for selecting a given activity using the scroll wheel. No activity at the time was selected. Per the usual the screen eventually activates on its own. I look down at the remote and see the first activity on the page become selected, then the selection starts moving from one activity to another all the while I'm not even touching the remote. The only way this is possible is by pressing the cursor down hard button or moving the scroll wheel, so clearly the remote was under the impression that the scroll wheel was being moved even though it wasn't. As such, it's certainly not a leap to come to the conclusion that the remote is registering that the scroll wheel is moving even though it's not which as a result is causing the screen to activate on its own.

Now as I just recently starting using this new TSU9600 I plan to take the next few weeks to ensure this issue of the screen activating on its own does not occur. So far so good. Needless to say I'm very pleased at this point. If after a few weeks I still find my new TSU9600 is not exhibiting this issue I'll send an email to the ProntoTeam per my findings.

Since originally posting the above back in November 2009 I am happy to report that my new TSU9600 (which contains the updated scroll wheel also used by the TSU9400/9800) has yet to ever have the screen activate on its own, undocked or docked, irrespective of what version of the firmware I have installed. Has been over 7 months of heavy daily use. My original TSU9600 which I've had since beta testing the remote prior to it being available for purchase presented this issue during the beta test (I reported the issue as a bug) and continued to present this issue through every firmware and editor version that has been released to date though not always as drastic as described above. Certainly appears in my particular case to be a hardware issue. That being said, my original TSU9600 finally bit the dust. On a brighter note, I finally have a TSU9600 in the new one I purchased last year that I don't have to rest face down when not in use as this was the only way with my old TSU9600 to not be utterly annoyed by the screen constantly activating on its own.

I have 2 remotes and for sure each remote 'pops' (little click from speaker) around every 56 seconds when not docked. Did not always do this, but only started around the 7.1.21 release of firmware.

My final opinion on this scroll-wheel activation subject. I wish Philips would indeed address it but maybe the solution is an updated remote. They have been unable to reproduce with several configurations I have sent them. Maybe they don't have older remote with plastic scroll wheel anymore. That, I do not know.

I also have to laugh a bit, I am a software guy, as I find it funny that this is wakeup is considered "a hardware problem". And, that with earlier firmware the wakeup did not occur and with later firmware it does (7.1.21 or higher as I don't think 5.0.6 had the issue). So, even though the newer hardware may not exhibit the issue, as a software guy, I strongly suspect that something in firmware changed such that the older hardware is more sensitive and wakeup occurs.

It's too bad my original TSU9600 bricked. Should have offered to send it back to Philips for testing per this issue. The remote does power up at this point, but goes straight into "Firmware Application Download" mode. Same thing happens if I reset the remote. Am unable to download any firmware version to the remote unfortunately. An error occurs during the process. A few weeks ago I did power on the remote and it actually booted up properly. The firm keys would not press down and the scroll wheel would not turn, but the rest of the hard buttons and on-screen buttons including the firm key labels worked. Used it this way as a second remote for a few weeks and decided to take the chance and try downloading an updated configuration file to the remote. It bricked again unfortunately, so it sits powered off collecting dust. Will probably try powering it on again in a few weeks just to see if I get lucky again.
