I like the remote....it's cool....But I'm really
considering sending this back to Radio Shack,
and going with a marantz 5000 or maybe making
a smaller jump to the AV3000.

How would the AV3000 be a smaller jump? The AV3000 is kind of a large remote. Plus, the manual isn't too well written and I've had some issues with programming mine. Heck, if my 2-year-old One4All Cinema 7 had more memory, I'd still be using that $25.00 remote control for all my needs.

When programmed with JP1, the Cinema 7 has more than enough memory for anyone. I have my 15-1994, which has the same memory, programmed to control 13 different devices!

Thanks chknlil. Mine arrives today. I'll post my impressions. I bought my Sony AV-3000 to replace a remote for my ReplayTV/tv/dvd/vcr/cable in the bedroom. It's not so easy to use lying down with a wife on one arm but I'm getting used to it. If it's not a lot easier I'll probably return it and get another AV-3000. It sure does have a powerful IR transmitter and I love that.

I scored on a Kameleon today from my local RS store. They are in quit short supply. I visited a few RS stores and they were able to pull up the inventory for the other stores around them and the counts were either very low or nothing was in stock at the moment.

I'll get things set up and post some comments a bit later today. Although some people have indicated this is a large remote. Well, it's not overwhelmingly large. It's got a bigger footprint than most people are used to, but it's nice and thin. Plus the aluminum backing makes it quite a sturdy remote. However, time will tell.

For anyone interested, I have several high-resolution pictures of the RS 15-2133. The collection includes pictures of the front and back, picture of the remote disassembled, backlight pictures, and side-by-side comparison pictures with the RS 15-2116. Enjoy!

I disagree that the AV3000 is a larger remote. This kameleon 15-2133 is friggen huge (long). At least the AV3000 is just fat and wide...and it sits on a table! The 15-2133 is almost like the end of a guitar. :) The 15-2133 is a two handed product for me, as is the AV3000.

I'm only being mean....and maybe it's just me...I hope so cause I really think it's a cool looking product, but I've used it for about a week now...And I'm almost to the point where I'm ready to pack it up and return it.

As far as a smaller jump, I was speaking in terms of costs really. A smaller jump to an AV3000 than a marantz...And I'm not convinced the marantz is all that great yet anyways.

Outstanding issues for me:

I can't figure out a way to make it use discrete codes.

I can't seem to get my Sony STR-DE835 to switch to the DVD with the kameleon....even after I have learned the fucntion from the orignal remotes. I was hoping to use a discrete code to get this to work...but no good...

If the display goes out...you have to wait for the display to turn on before you can use the buttons. In other words there are no hard buttons on the devices, like other display remotes use for common functions.

Overall, Between my AV2000, and the 15-2133 Kameleon, I've been happier with the AV2000...that is why I'm considering the AV3000....but then again...maybe I've not give the 15-2133 a fair shot.

First impressions:

I really like it! In some ways it's much nicer than my Sony AV-3000. DEFINATELY much lighter and I like that it's very easy to use with one hand. I like the 'click' when you push a button and it's very easy to program.

So far the BIG negative is that it only will let you program about 25 learned commands. I called the support line today and they were closed. I was hoping they had a code for the ReplayTV remote. If not I'm going to have to return it because my ReplayTV remote has 40 buttons and I guess it can't learn them all. I didn't bother to try because the manual says it's only 25 learned commands and I don't want to have to erase them all.

More soon...

It sounds like we need to wait in a JP1 option for this device to properly program it.

If your considering the AV3000, I have one that is 4 days old. $110.00 + actual shipping costs.

deaded,
Yes, the 15-2133 has codes for the ReplayTV (VCR 0614 and 0616). It also has all of the functions you need assigned to buttons!

Oh my god, demiller9, you're right! I didn't even see it!! And it works great! Very very very cool! Ok, I can keep it :) Now one minor annoyance is that I want the arrow keys and select button to be on all the time. It seems that the 2133 won't let you turn on a key that is off, which kinda sucks. I wonder why they did that.

I am enjoying it. It's got a 'whine' to it when the light is on, but I don't hear it when the lights is off, thankfully. The IR seems quite strong (I don't have to lift it over the foot of our big 'sleigh' bed to run the DVD) and it seems pretty easy to operate with one hand.

I'm excited that there might be a JP1 option for this puppy!

I'm getting a 15-2133 for Christmas. Does it has codes for a stand-alone TiVo (Sony) unit? Thanks!

this puppy!

The Kameleon features a 6-pin female connector right under the battery door. Getting the JP1 cable to stay in place and keep the battery juice going to the remote might be a little tough because of the way that it's laid out.

I just read that BlueDo sells a JP1 cable for $17.## and they include a male adapter also. However, they are currently out of stock. :(

Getting back to my first paragraph. Do the OneForAll remotes require battery power when programming them? If they don't then, the battery door issue will not be a problem with the Kameleon.

Over in Yahoo Groups, I found my answer. One individual has been able to successfully read the firmware from the Kameleon by holding the JP1 cable w/male adapter into the slot.

This does look promising.

Yes the manual does mention TIVO although I don't know which manufacturer that is. I don't have the manual in front of me now, so I don't know if it has more than one code listed. The usual Tivo code is VCR 0618.

Some JP1 cables provide power to the eeprom, some do not; it depends upon the cable design (simple, powered, etc). You would need to provide power by completing the battery circuit if the cable does not provide power to the eeprom. For others reading this that don't know the issue: the 2133 battery cover completes the connection that provides power to the remote, but the cover must be removed to access the JP1 holes (connector). Therefore accessing the JP1 connector leaves the remote and the eeprom without power.
