Some JP1 cables provide power to the eeprom, some
do not; it depends upon the cable design (simple,
powered, etc). You would need to provide power
by completing the battery circuit if the cable
does not provide power to the eeprom. For others
reading this that don't know the issue: the 2133
battery cover completes the connection that provides
power to the remote, but the cover must be removed
to access the JP1 holes (connector). Therefore
accessing the JP1 connector leaves the remote
and the eeprom without power.
Don

Don,

Thanks. That's essentially what I read over at Yahoo Groups. There are some cables that can provide power to the remote control unit so they can be programmed. With the Kameleon, the battery cover is small, awkward and looks like it needs to be in place. However, a member on the Yahoo Groups was able to hold the batteries and the JP1 connector in such a fashion, that he was able to extract the code from the Kameleon.

Also, another person devised a clip to hold the JP1 in place along with the batteries. If anyone is thinking seriously about programming the Kameleon (and realizing that it can be done) please join the Yahoo Group for "JP1" - because lots of good information is contained out there.

Yes the manual does mention TIVO although I don't
know which manufacturer that is. I don't have
the manual in front of me now, so I don't know
if it has more than one code listed. The usual
Tivo code is VCR 0618.

The Sony TiVo code is VCR/0636 and, yes, it's included.

Robman,
I know you have a ReplayTV (or used to). Are you using your Kameleon with it? If so how do you get over the fact that when you select the Replay Guide the Channel +/- goes away (so you can't page up/down)? You have to screen back, use the channel +/- to navigate, and then screen back AGAIN to press the 'select' button or to use the arrow keys to navagate once you found the right page.

For me this seems to be a sticking point. It's just not convenient for me to keep switching screens on the remote every time I want to change channels or look through my Replay guide. I still have to call the support line (hopefully tomorrow if I wake early enough) but if they say that I can't have all that stuff at once I'll take the unit back and get another AV-3000. Bummer cuz I do like this thing.

I still use my 15-1994 to control my system, which includes a couple of ReplayTVs, I just got the Kameleon so I could create the RDF for it, I'll be returning it before the 30 days are up.

While vanishing buttons is cool for people who are not that comfortable with remotes, most "power users" have already found a use for all of them.

Anyone know if the Kameleon can operate the RCA Directv Ultimatetv PVR?

Even if I have to teach it to the 2133, I think I'm going to get the 2133 this week and if all goes well, sell my Sony AV2000.

Also, is there a way to "lock" it from being messed with? My little girl seems to love playing with remotes and I was hoping there was a lockout feature like some Sony remotes.

Any OFA remote would make a great UTV remote.

I've read through the manual and there doesn't appear to be a way of "locking" the remote control. Given the fact that it lights up when touched or moved, the Kameleon might prove to be an attraction for your daughter. My 9-year-old daughter was impressed with the Kameleon and thought it was "cool" - I guess she can't fully appreciate all the effort that I put into the programming of our remotes.

Robman...demiller 9:

Thanks....do you know if it displays all the pertinent keys (TiVO button, list, clear, etc.) or will they need to be learned from the original remote?

I just bought the Kameleon, but I will be taking it back tomorrow. It doesn't Recognize my TEAC Reference DVD, Receiver and MD Player. In addition it doesn map the buttons for my Panasonic television properly. The volume and channel buttons need to be used in the menu mode of the TV in stead of the menu buttons of the Kameleon. That sucks. The thing is not expensive, but I expect it work proporly for its money. The upgrade fuvtion over the internet doesn't work.

If your television doesn't use the menu buttons (arrows?) at all, why don't you do keymoves and copy the necessary volume and channel buttons onto them.

Magic ** 994 ** TV Vol+ TV UpArrow **, etc.

For anyone interested, I have several high-resolution
pictures of the RS 15-2133.

Wow, it is amazing how different the keys of this remote look compared to the European/German model that I have. I never thought they would make different key pads for the regions... It looks completely different.

Regards, Stefan.

yeah, and we (US) got a "P" button instead of the silly rabbit/Hat deal. How big is the eeprom on yours? We got 2K.

I picked up one of the only ones in this town (full of Rat Shacks BTW) and I must say I am extremely happy with it so far.

I'm amazed at how well the remote mimics the buttons I use most without having to use a bunch of the learning portion to make it work.

It even has my UltimateTV coding and it works flawlesslly..yeah!!

I think I'm going to get a second one for the bedroom (when Rat Shack re-stocks that is).

Looks like the Sony AV2000 is headed to EBay..I finally found a universal remote that looks cool and acts cool...AND is wife approved!

Yeah. Too bad. If I could get them to stay on I would have kept it. I took it back and got the Universal MX-500 which seems perfect for the bedroom.
