Review:WOW! What a great remote.

The One for All 8in1 Kameleon is easy to use, program, and looks good too. It can operate 8 different av-stuffs and even includes dedicated PVR buttons. (I don't have a PVR, but if I did, I guess I would be even happier). 2 mins after the batteries were in and a quick glance at the instruction book, I was controlling my JVC TV, Sony VCR, Panasonic DVD-recorder, Samsung DVD player, DirecTV reciever, and Kenwood A/V Reciever. For some strange reason, it did not want to operate my Kenwood 200 Disk changer, even though my old One for All Cinema 7 could. No problem. A quick phone call, remote up to the telephone, and boom, the internal modem picked up on the code they were sending, and I was now in control of all my devices.

In addition to the learning capabilites, you can program advanced codes too. So instead of teaching certain buttons that aren't native to the Kameleon's layout, you can go online (hifi-remote), find the advanced code and map it to a button instead of learning, saving you tons of space (you can only learn 16-25 buttons).

Plus it's got cool stuff like volume lock, macros, keymover and the "home theatre" setting, where all the adjustments you usually make (Satellite channel, TV settings, DVD controls etc.) can all be under the one category.

Not only that, when it lights up, it looks like tron the movie. Although it might be too cool. Had my boss over the other night. It lit up when I picked it up and my boss remarked that obviously he must be paying me too much.

But the biggest bonuses for me were #1 it was WELL under $100 #2 it controls everything I want it to, and #3 My wife can operate it.

I give it a 9/10

Strengths:Product is cool look and light. Also the fact that its light up is really nice at night. I am impressed with physical quality of product.
Weaknesses:This product lacks in workability. It work find out of box with Toshibia DVD, got it to work with my Toshibia TV. Direct TV TIVO unit and Harmon Karmon 525 AMP forget it.. Lucky It within the 14 days to return the thing.
Review:I have the following home theather setup and looking for a way to simplified the remotes:

Harmon Karmon 525 Reciever
Hughes DirecTV TIVO unit.
Toshiba 32 in TV
Toshiba SD-4800 Progressive Scan DVD
Microsoft XBox ( also connected )

The two toshiba's work fine but the TIVO
and the Harmon Karmon foget it. I try several times including all codes in manual. Easy to set up - what a laugh - it has no visual indications of what is going on - I wish they included an LCD so that you know what is going on.

I not sure if the keys were pressed but I try the code several times and the Reciever and TIVO which are both under a year old did not work.

I might be unlucky with my devices but if other devices are like this, I would not recommend this product at all.

Buyer beware - make sure that you buy this product where you know you can take it back. In fact I taking mind back tommorrow and getting my money back.

Strengths:Excellent looks and graphics.
The only one that actually control replaytv pvr flawlessly.
Weaknesses:Humm maybe the fact that it has to be moved to be powered on...but really not a problem
Review:I was taken by the looks i must admit....and the fact that controlled pvrs was my second decision making. Got home opened the package and there was actually a code number for my pvr (replay tv) and voilois ! It works like a charm the only programming i had to do was to assign a bottom for the commercial advance feature . And really if you barely touch it it powers on again so no big deal.

Review 4 made on Thursday August 21, 2003 at 10:58 AM.
Strengths:Ease of use, powerful
Weaknesses:Some macro limitations, odd home theatre mode power button glitch.
Review:First off, this is a very nice remote. It has a nice feel, it looks cool, and is easy to program.

That being said, there are a couple of things you may want to think about before purchasing this model:

1. The macro feature is a nice touch. However, there is a glaring problem. I'm sure most people will spend most of their time in the home theatre mode. This mode allows multiple devices to be controlled with a single setting (such as volume controlling the stereo system, while channel buttons control the cable box). However, there is no way to activate the home theatre mode within a macro. In my case, I am using a macro to switch my stereo system to video mode and switch my TV to channel 3 so that everything is ready to watch TV. But at the end of the macro, I am NO LONGER IN HOME THEATRE MODE. This means that if I don't physically press the home theatre button my remote is no longer in the proper mode for controlling my devices!

2. The remote has a really nice feature in home theatre mode for controlling the power button with a macro. This can be used to turn off or on all of your components with a single button. At the end of the macro the remote is automatically returned to home theatre mode. HOWEVER, some of the buttons don't work properly once this happens. For instance, before using the power macro button the up/down/left/right arrows properly control my cable box. After using the power macro, these buttons do nothing unless I manually push the home theatre button again.

Although I can get used to the limitations, the above problems will certainly confuse anyone else who is using the remote.

Other than these things, the remote is nice.

Review 2 made on Saturday August 9, 2003 at 1:10 PM.
Strengths:High cool factor with the digital ink display; good signal strength; feels good in the hand; displays current device with key animation; support for PVRs with dedicated device button; dedicated macro buttons.
Weaknesses:Needs to be moved/shaken to activate the key display before you can press any buttons; lack of real buttons; position of VCR buttons at bottom makes them very difficult to use with one hand.
Review:I've owned it for 24 hours now and will likely return it. I'll admit I was taken with the cool factor but that it ultimately spelled its demise. I was also sold on the dedicated PVR device feature.

The biggest problem is that the display is not active all the time so you need to shake the thing to wake it up before it will show you the button display and respond to button presses. This was the deal breaker for me.

I often use my remote to watch PVR content and use the VCR buttons to scan/skip around content. With this remote, I might trigger a fast forward operation, the display goes to sleep, I find the spot I want to being play at, I need to shake the thing to wake it up, slight delay, spot missed, flurry of button presses to finally stop the fast forward. Not good.

It's the same with channel surfing. You have to wake it up every time you want to press a button unless it's within the eight seconds (or so) of awake time. Argh!

As for general usability: it provides much of the same capabilities of other remotes from this (UEI?) company's line of remotes. Learning from other remotes was no problem.

I especially liked the fact that there's a dedicated PVR device button but it's really no different than using an AUX1 device button to control the PVR, it's just labelled correctly.

So, buyer beware. If you aren't an intensive remote user and you like cool looking gadgets, then this might work for you. Otherwise, it's a pain to have to wake the thing up every time to press a button. Ugh.
