I am trying to learn the IR Codes of my new Digital TV Box. I have no Information about the make or model (the cable company doesnt give the information, its switzerlands cablecom). Until today i had no problem with many devices, but this time, not even one of the learned cods works (i use prontoedit sotware via usb).

Here is a sample of the learned code for the OK Button:

The protocol that uses was misnamed "Dreambox" by the person here who first reverse engineered it. At the moment I forget its correct name, but "Dreambox" is the best keyword anyway to search for the many other threads where similar signals are discussed.

Some of those threads discuss why these signals rarely learn correctly, and they link to cleaned up codes for many devices using these signals. Your device might use exactly the same signals as one of those, so you may find good signals by testing a few cleaned up codes found through other threads.

I don't have time today for a more detailed examination of that signal. Maybe tomorrow. But if the correct signal is not a perfect match for one discussed in another thread, I probably can't deduce the correct signal from just one sample. I would need learns from several different original keys.

Many thanks for answering that fast. I tried your code but it doesn't work. I have also tried some samples from different thread. The Red Light indicating IR Transmissions on the Cable TV Receiver doesn't even blink. I have searched the Forum and have learned a lot about RC5 Codes and everything but i still don't understand whats the problem.

I learned the Codes holding down the Buttons on the Remote Control until ProntoEdit said it was learned (also tried pushing short, generates different codes but still unuseable).

But based on the additional bad codes you posted, I found a CCF file containing good versions of those same codes and more. I emailed the CCF to you. The codes you want are all in the "codes" panel of the "cable" device. I assume they work for whoever created that ccf file. My decode software says they are all good and they match all the correct parts of the bad signals you posted above.

I don't know where I got that CCF file. It was dated Feb 19 of this year, so I ought to remember, but I don't. For most ccf files I keep, I have a text file giving me the URL from which I got the file. But this time I don't.

These are not RC5 codes. They are "XMP" codes (what my software and most threads on the subject call "Dreambox" codes).

There are a couple problems with your learned signals, both of which are discussed in detail in some of the old threads on "Dreambox":

1) While learning, the Pronto has misaligned the repeat portion of the signal, so it wraps on a boundary that the Pronto can't reproduce while transmitting.

2) The XMP protocol is sensitive to much smaller changes in durations than other IR protocols. While learning, the Pronto "cleans up" the signal, making intentional small changes to the durations. For XMP, those small changes often break the meaning of the signal.

A short press might stop the Pronto from detecting the repeat pattern, so it couldn't misalign the repeat pattern. So it might help. But it is a very crude approach to solving that half of the problem and does nothing for the other half.

Most IR protocols, including XMP, don't care if the frequency is slightly wrong. I didn't research whether the frequency of your learned signals is wrong at all. It certainly isn't more than slightly wrong.

Try converting the signals from that CCF that I emailed.

If that doesn't work, I may have some further ideas.

i am disapointed to tell you that it still doesn't work. must have been an older version of the cablecom box. i tried first with a converted version of the ccf you e-mailed me. not even one of all the codes got a reaction from the device (the receiver codes for the NAD in the ccf worked fine with my NAD - so we can be sure that the converting worked). then i copied some of the codes to my pcf and tried again - nothing.
any other ideas would be appreciated, thanks for sending me the sample ccf and everything you did so far. in the meantime i keep searching for discussions on "Dreambox".

I didn't notice anything in that ccf to tell me what model or even brand of cable box it was. I did not select that ccf file based on the type of cable box. I selected it because the correct signals in that ccf matched the values I decoded from the bad signals you posted. So I'm nearly certain that ccf file contains the correct signals for your cable box.

But that leaves the question of why it didn't work.

A file for NG Pronto does not store signals in a format similar to the Pronto Hex that is used to paste and disply signals in ProntoEdit. When you paste in Pronto Hex, ProntoEditNG translates to another format. When you view the Pronto Hex, it translates back.

Those translation processes are imperfect. Possibly the signals are being destroyed by errors in the translation. After saving the pasted signals, you can reopen the dialog to see how much they were changed by translation to internal format and back. Some amount of change is normal. Post some of the changed codes and I can tell whether the change was enough to destroy the meaning.

Maybe a stupid question. Does the cable box respond to its own remote using IR signals? Some cable boxes can be set to RF and I'm wondering if this is the case.

@Lyndel McGee: yes, it responds to its own remote (the one i learn the codes from). It seems to be an IR Remote Control (Holtek CA21KDV-LF-2003 / RC-39870R00-09 tag#2) made for the cablecom company. "Designed with UEI technology" whatever that means.

I found out what make and type the box is:

After that i fount the thread where the ccf comes from [Link: remotecentral.com]. I copied some Codes from Post10 to try again - still no success. The only thing i noticed this time is, that the Code changed when i save and reopen.

I'm running low on ideas. Maybe Lyndel has more ideas. What model Pronto are you using? Maybe the is something else wrong with the way the Pronto is configured. Some Pronto models can be configured (often by mistake) to send only RF not IR. I think others here know more about that than I do.

None of your learned signals for this device are correct. But I would have expected half of them to work anyway. Each signal has an initial part to indicate the button was pressed followed by a repeat part to indicate it is held. None of the repeat parts in learned signals you posted are correct, but some of them have correct initial parts. I think those should get a response from the device.

I also still think that CCF and my constructed signal are correct.

UEI is the company behind the OneForAll brand of universal remotes. They also are the inventors of the XMP protocol used by your cable box. They also design remote controls for many other brands, apparently including your cable box. They also license a database of IR codes used in the Prontos. So it is possible that the code set you need is built into your Pronto, but I don't have a good guess how to identify it.

The Model is RU950. I think if the Pronto would only send RF, it wouldnt work with my other Devices (TV, Receiver, DVD Player, MCE)? Thanks anyway, i keep on trying..

Is there maybe a chance, that a newer model of the pronto works different? i've been thinking about buying the color version for some time. if there is a chance, i try and find someome where i can test this with a newer model. Also i've heard that it works with the Nevo SL..

I wish some expert who knows more about specific Pronto modelss than I do had commented on that.

If I correctly understood previous threads on this subject, some Pronto models let you configure specific devices so the signals for that device are sent only by RF. That doesn't stop IR from being sent for other devices.

I don't know which models do that, nor what you should check in ProntoEditNG to make sure you haven't done that. I was expecting some other expert to either answer that, or tell me it doesn't apply to this model.
