I would like to add the Playstation 3 to my entertainment center. I understand that the remote is bluetooth and therefore I am not sure how I would be able to control the PS3 as a Blueray player. Any thoughts or workarounds would be appreciated.

This has been previously discussed. As the remote is bluetooth, there is no IR or RF capability. I wish I had a better answer but I think you are out of luck.

I have been using the Sony BD controller for the PS3 and the Sixaxis controller and will say that the responsiveness of the Bluetooth remotes beats that of any RF or IR remote I have tried (including my Pronto). Hopefully other AV products will follow Sony's lead.

Perhaps Philips should dump the crappy RF extender that they use and switch to Bluetooth.

You're probably talking about the "repeat command rate", which is something I usually include in my reviews... and yes, it seems that the more sophisticated remotes generally are slower in this regard. However, they *are* dealing with often slow-to-respond devices and light rather than a constant 2-way RF connection. Bluetooth might be an interesting direction for remotes to go, but I think WiFi might be more versatile (considering BT's range limits and people's penchant for controlling things through walls and from across the house).

Although sure it's a pain in the a** not having the PS3 ready made for IR control, but I don't think it's grounds for black balling it. Someone or some company was eventually going to have to step up the plate and introduce bluetooth or wifi as a new control method for the masses. Both are better than IR or RF and of course allow for the always useful two way communication. It's really the natural order of things.... equipment first (PS3, HTPC, etc), and then control methods (universal remotes, keyboards/mouse). No manufacturer would produce a remote that didn't control anything...lol.

IMHO it's a forgone conclusion that some manufacture will come up with a IR module for the PS3.... it's just a matter of time. Personally I don't think it's a mistake, just the next leap. Which sony is known to take every once in a while.

What kind of range are you thinking of with BlueTooth? I haven't hit it yet, and traveling through different floors and multiple walls. Just curious what it would be.

There is another way in my opinion, Usning the PS2 orignal DVD remote, but with an Hp Media Center Remote IR reciever.

Edit: This unit powers through USB and it works with any IR remote. I havn't tried this remote since i don't have the system yet! But I'm more than sure this would work. Also This makes a lot cleaner IR solution to the PS3. =]

Except that doesn't work. It would require Sony to provide drivers for it, which they haven't done.

The reason the hodgepodge works is because it emulates a standard wired game controller's buttons which Sony *has* implemented support for. The IR receiver is, well, a USB IR receiver and Sony hasn't put any thought into those (yet?).

(And yes, I tried this route when I first got a PS3.)

Has anyone accomplished the PS3 code learning (described in the article) and posted them on Remote Central? I've looked but can't find anything.

I wonder if a PC with a Bluetooth dongle (cell phone syncing, etc) would work with some sort of middleware (Girder perhaps)? Since I don't have a PS3, I don't know, but all you would need to do is pair the dongle with the PS3.

Wonder what kind of latency would be there with that type of solution?

I know this is an old thread but I saw this on another forum. Quite cheap $19.99 and I think worth it for the USB dongle alone. But once you have it, I would think the remote provided can be used to do the necessary on the Pronto and then put away with all your others!

This doesn't seem to have any more options than what's already available with the PS2 remote hack solution (though for those who don't have the PS2 IR solution, then the Logic 3 might be useful). The main question is, will the Logic 3 also work with the PS3 media bar/menu, or will it only work while playing a DVD (like the PS2 IR hack)? Let us know! Thanks.
