Except that doesn't work. It would require Sony to provide drivers for it, which they haven't done.

The reason the hodgepodge works is because it emulates a standard wired game controller's buttons which Sony *has* implemented support for. The IR receiver is, well, a USB IR receiver and Sony hasn't put any thought into those (yet?).

(And yes, I tried this route when I first got a PS3.)
