Could the Q50/NC-50 ever support 2-way communication?

I apologize in advance if I'm asking a REALLY dumb question. But working on my configuration tonight, realized how useful it would be to have conditional commands based on status requests.

Example: My processor has an endless array of surround modes and parameters that practically require a flowchart to keep straight which ones work with which other ones. It'd be very cool to have different options pages in the Q-50, so maybe an "Options" button would first check the mode status, then jump to the appropriate page based on what mode the processor is actually in. Currently, the Q50/NC-50 can't receive replies to status requests, so this is all moot.

But my question is whether that is a permanent limitation of the architecture or whether the z-wave connection could eventually work both ways and the Q-50 could accept and use this feedback info?

Maybe this is why people pay so much for AMX and Crestron-type systems?

Addendum: There is also the question of whether the NC-50 could do this, but even if it required a new type of NevoConnect, I'm specifically interested in whether the Q-50 could ever accommodate this.

So does this mean that it IS a really dumb question, or that nobody has any thoughts on whether the Q50 could potentially to handle 2-way z-wave communication....?

I think that you are asking a lot of the remote, even with all it can do. I don't believe that its architecture is open or powerful enough to do this.

Z-wave most likely won't be the method to go concerning two-way control like this. WiFi is much more solid, as data can be dispatched in packets, resulting in a much more dependable communication format.

Z-wave is ok for lighting switches right now, as they are simply "on, dim, dim, dim off". Not much data there...

For construction of "if then else" conditionals, you'll need a system with more bells and whistles. RTI's XP-8 will 'eventually' have an update that allows for 2-way RS232 control. Pronto's RFX9600 allows for advanced RS232 now, and Prontoscript controls can be written to do a lot of cool stuff. There are already existing scripts written and usable for some Denon receivers. I am not sure whether they allow for the kind of control that you are talking about.

I'm trying to understand your wish list stuff. Can you be a little more descriptive with exactly what you want to do with the remote.

In my mind, you are approaching this backwards. I would program the remote so that it switches the audio format based on the source, and even on the channel, in the macro for the source/ channel. With that macro, you can then page flip to a page associated with the specific audio format.

Thanks for the reply, Evo. I probably am asking too much...I usually do. :) I acknowledge that I usually want more features & functions immediately available than I actually need in use. Your suggestion about source macros is likely what I'll do, although it's not quite as specific as I'd hoped.

By that I mean that I don't always want the same settings for a source. I use my Pioneer BD player for my most of my SD-DVD playback, for example, and sometimes want different audio processing depending on the content. Recently we watched a good 70s film that had a really horrible sound mix (The Taking of Pelham 123), and these often benefit from very different processing than I'd use for a typical Blu-Ray. The available sub-settings for different surround modes varies quite a bit, so I thought it would be cool if I could always ensure that the correct settings pages come up based on the actual state of the processor (as confirmed by the desired status call).

I'll likely just come up with a set of my favorite surround settings configs, and create macros for them. Thanks again for the reply.
