This site is a great site, and if I had to enter my password each time I logged in, I would still frequent it as much as I do. (Check my stats.) If the site is not worthy enough of entering a password now and then, then you don't really think much of this site.

Greg:

I appreciate your response.

If I didn't like the site I wouldn't be here. Because I like the site, I offered the feature requests.

I believe this site needs to update and/or improve
its method for user authentication

This is actually in the Forum FAQ...

I don't want to type in my user name and password every time. Can this be automated?
Yes, however your computer must accept cookies for this to work. Log in to "Manage My Account" and make sure that the "Store Password" option is set to "Yes". Press "Submit" to set the cookie on your computer. If your information is still not entered automatically in the forums - and you are sure cookies are enabled in your browser - try rebooting your computer. Note that you must perform this operation from each computer you want to access the forums from. You can mix-and-match whether to store your password (or not) on different computers.

It would be possible to re-apply the name/password cookie on new posts, but folks would no longer be able to configure whether they want their password stored on the computer or not. Since I changed the forum over to the new account system I have not ever had to re-apply my cookie...

1. Set up my forum account to send me an E-mail
whenever there is a new post in a thread I am
involved in.

Right now I've no plans to implement that.

2. Send a private forum message to other users.

An interesting feature for forums where total anonymity is required (ahem), but for remote controls? Post publically, send an email (if you need anon, use Hotmail) or instant message.

3. Add other members to my "buddies list", so
I can see when they are logged in, and send them
private messages.

This would require the forum to keep track of who's active, who was active but is no longer, etc. Whenever I get more power/disk space and I'm satisfied the data files aren't going to be corrupted from constant writing, I may add this along with a thread view counter. But not for a little while.

4. Insert pictures and attachments in messages.

With my current disk space situation this is not a good idea -- I'd have to limit file types and sizes, length of storage, etc. Most users have enough web space with their default ISP account to upload files, then just provide a link in the forum.

5. I have a high speed connection and notice
that Remote Centrals site frequently seems to
slow to a crawl

Now this is a strange one, since I've been unable to really duplicate it (it's fine from where I'm coming from, and no I'm not close to the server).

Larry,

Glad someone carried on with it, others may have thought I was as loony as the rhubarb crumble. Talking of which...

Just remember ...

Dear sir/madam, Bagshot, Surrey (Monday, 10:41pm)

Once again I must protest in the strongest possible terms! Someone seems to have Shanghaied the Hitler Youth of today they are upsetting my dog. Will the insanity never end?

But I must reiterate, I have a high speed connection (nudge-nudge, wink-wink) and that just about dictates that I use several different PC's at my home and office. As a result i may lose my train of thought several dozen times a day. and my hand hurts constantly, I get cramps in my forearm and I'm sure I need glasses. "cantinflas" "golden girls" "matlock" and so without further ado i guffaw with glee chuckle like a chimp and titter whilst crying, loafing and drinking Snapple from betweenst young yuppies Perfumed Breasts...

However, you sirs & madames seem to suffer from multiple personality disorders. My husband, in common with a lot of people of his age, is sixty and fancies ME quite sane. You Sir, however, are a Twit! But I must reiterate,

Shut UP!!! No, you shut up!
Shut UP!!! No, you shut up!
Shut UP!!! No, you shut up!
Shut UP!!! No, you shut up!

OH shut-up, you loose brained sheep shearer..... WHO ARE YOU CALLING A SHEEP SHEARER? Why, YOU, of course - Sir or Madame, as the case may be!

Yours sincerely,
Brigadier N. F. Marwood-Git [Mrs.](tired){VERY}

Daniel:

Thanks for your response. I don't really think there is any right or wrong on most of this, everyone has his or her own preferences.

The only subject I think I am right about is that user authentication should work better. I did read the FAQ and do understand how it works. I still think I should be able to go to any PC and (only) enter my user name and password (with cookies enabled), and the system should recognize me for some set period of time until it logs me out. That is the way just about every web site I visit works (hotmail, etc.). Perhaps the reason that I feel so strongly about this is that I am obsessed with making things simple for my customers, and am convinced that the simpler you make things for people, the more members you will have. The fact that more people don’t post about this doesn’t mean it isn’t an issue.

Thanks for a great site.
