This is very similar (too similar) to an episode of Twilight zone or something similar i saw a few years ago where this wierdo gambler would be his cars and other valuables against the opportunity to cut off one of his opponents fingers. He would bet on things like " I like your lighter, want to bet you cant light it ten times in a row".
