Assuming that the bluetooth remote is 2-way, does the
*remote* know whether the PS3 is on or off? Or is this
some sort of 1-way implementation?

The blueTooth remote use in some way a 2-way communications. When you sync the remote with the PS3 it's really the remote that receive the PS3 'IP' address. This is easy to prove. If you try the remote on a second system it wants work. So you sync again the remote with system 2. If you go back to system 1 you'll have to sync again with system 1. In conclusion, the remote learn the 'IP' address of the PS3 and not the reverse.

That said, I can't determine out of doubt if PS3 and remote are in beat. After you hit a key they are linked together and this can be observed easily: the current reach few milli-amps in this case. However after few minutes of inactivity (no key press) the remote will go down to full idle state: less than a milli-amp. So the BlueTooth link is not maintained in permanence. This feature is to preserve battery life.

So the answer is no, the remote can’t determine out of doubt that the PS3 is ‘on’ or ‘off’.

Come on...those controller cords were so short that you have to be seated close enough to the console to reach it.

The final touch for external supply (a request by Daniel Tonks) is done. I'll ship a demo remote to Daniel this week for him to review. He will be the judge.

The good news is that I resolved issues with all keys. My code now support Sony codes for:

- Standard DVD/PS2/PS3
- Recordable DVD
- Blu-Ray
- and finally four custom code set (another request by Daniel)

By default all code sets are supported. A specific one can be enable, disabling the others.

With this, a single IR remote + multiple Sony BD remote can control multiple PS3 without conflict. Custom code allow a no conflict situation if you already own standard Sony DVD/BD player(s).

I'll provide few remotes to colleagues/friends, my Beta tester.

Regards,
Ben

I haven't read every post here, but I believe a firmware update provides for Wake On Lan (WOL) to turn a PS3 on from low power mode (at least).

Ben, if all goes well with Daniel's testing, will you be selling these to folks in the US? I just bought a PS3 and am very interested in buying one of these. If you have a "pre-order" list, I'd gladly sign up now.

Regards,
Dino

It is a very nice development.

However, my goal is to use just one remote for everything under the sun and moon.

This mod will still leave my with an extra remote .

At the moment I am using PDA (Dell x51v) with RemoteControl II 2.12. It controls pretty much everything, from lights to PCs to all A/V equipment.

Since almost every PDA/cell phone now has BT installed, PDA BT remote program could resolve evrything for me.

I've heard there is RemoteControl II v.3.0 in the works which includes Wi-Fi capabilities. It "might" include BT as well. Frank, if you are reading those posts, you know what we need :D

This is the case. The Sony BD remote will be somewhere in the rack it will act as a bridge between your PDA and the PS3. You will not have to manipulate it.

Same for me with my Harmony 880.

Not so sure about that. The Sony OS is expecting the 'Sony BD Remote for PS3' ID when synching the device with the PS3.

Why 'Guitar Heroes III for PS3' is not BlueTooth? Could it be that Sony wants to keep some of the BlueTooth feature proprietary? I don't have the answer to this. If there is someone out there that has successfully used a non-Sony BlueTooth device (excluding keyboard/mouse) than I'm wrong.
