I'm 99% sure that it is 4 AA.... sorry for the disapointment.

Even better. That means I wouldn't have to swap recharged AA batteries as often as I would with AAA's. The Maha charger can charge either 4 AA or 4 AAA plus it has trickle charge. I utilized two sets of batteries keeping one set fully charged at all times. :)

Looking through the software for the 900, I've found it doesn't have the IR database of 2 components I own. One is about 6 months old (Harmon Kardon AVR-240) and the other is over a year old. Linksys MCE Extender. WMCE54AG

Does this share the IR database of their other software? Are they all this behind with the database? I found that I can create my own device in the IR database, but it would be nice to have the real codes.

Does anyone know the MSRP on the MX-900 yet?

I read the owners manual for this remote and it looks like it is more powerful than the MX-850. The MX-900 can handle up to 40 devices with 40 pages for each compared to the MX-850's 20 devices wth 4 pages for each. The MX-900 is supposed to have 8 megs of memory. I am not sure what the MX-850 has.

I have a couple of questions relating to the back lighting:

1. Will any button on the remote activate the back lighting or can it only be activated by pressing the side button?

2. The manual indicates that you can change the back lighting color. If this is true, what are the color choices?

Final Comment:
I like this remote. I think I can live with the 6 menu display in order to obtain a remote that is more comfortable to use. I like having the rewind, play and fast forward hard buttons placed closer together especially when I am skipping commercials for programs recorded on my Sony DVD/HDD recorder or on my VCR.

It's hard to get all the codes in the world in the DB. The same DB is shared by all their products, however, if you call up their tech support, they can add your stuff to the DB, but you have to be without your native remote for a few days.

They all have the same database. Companies do not change codes very often, so don't worry if your exact model number is not there. In the case of the HK AVR-240, the 235 or 335 will likely be the same and give you all the commands.

Some components may be a little too obscure to be included, in which case you can simply learn the commands from your component's remote.

Daryl,

The TX-1000 does indeed use 4 AA batteries, and as for the size... It is 5 3/8" Wide by 6 1/2" long. It is kind of wedge shaped being 1" tall at the side nearest you, and 1 5/8 at the side farthest from you during use.

Just for the record the name aegina has gone away, it is now known as "Medius"

flash214,

On the 900, the light can only be activated by the button on the side, and the backlight color is not able to be changed, unless it is capable but the firmware doesn't yet support it. I haven't looked at the manual yet.

The price is $399. The light button is the only way to activate it.
I have a beta unit and it is a very solid remote. I like its smaller size and the page forward/back make the 6 lines tolerable.

Vincent, please doublecheck your statement about backlighting on the MX-900. The manual does suggest this is possible, but it is not possible at the time of this post. It may support it and become available in a firmware revision before the final release though.

Thanks for the quick replies to my questions.

It's a pity that only the side button activates the back light. At least the six buttons adjacent to the screen should also activate the back light when pressed. Universal should give the user additional options in the setup relating to how the back light is activated? Don't other MX models have back lights that turn on with any button on the remote? That would be nice to have considering that the MX-900 does not have an activation sensor like the MX-950 has.

Is it relatively easy to see the display without the back light on in low light conditions?

Vincent,

Daniel had to delete 20+ posts from you on how horrible URC is and that you'd never use them again, and how you think they don't care.

What are you doing with beta product? I thought you'd moved on, or did you finally realize they are a good company to deal with?

OR did you not tell URC yet that you refuse to sell their product so you can take the beta stuff when it comes by?

Just wondering

That would personally drive me nuts. I buy hard button remotes so that I don't have to look at it, and so the light never comes on. As long as it was defeatable, that would be fine.

why did you feel the need to create a new alias to ask me this? Actually it was the same post copied and pasted like 20 times :) Believe me they are well aware of our dissatisfaction. I was contacted by Eric Johnson and it is obvious that he is very passionate about his products. He went out of his way to assure me that what happened to me would never happen again. My whole issue was the lack of support I had received. And the lack of a follow up by their tech support. Eric has done what he could to make it up to us. I have used URC product with great results and while I have taken on the RTI line, they are considerably more when it is all said and done. URC has a great price point.

I have to agree, Eric is very passionate about the URC product and he will do all he can to get a situation handled and keep the sellers and installers of their product happy. He has helped many of us over the phone while on site sometimes rather late.

I understand having a case of bad tech support, (i think it's happened to us all at one time or another) but I try not to let one person ruin my feelings about a whole company.

I recently had a problem with a media server and after 3 calls to tech support I figured it out myself. Being the helpful type I kindly called them back and told them where the bug was so their software engineers could fix it (but that's a topic for a new thread). I still like the product and company although I think their tech support could be a little better at times, they did try to help me.

Back to the topic, we do use URC with much success, there hasn't been a system yet we couldn't make work without much trouble, and they are at a great price point.

Vincent:

P.S about my previous post. Did you actually change the backlight color on a 900? I just can't see it being possible
