Premade cables very often use stranded cable, so they are more flexible and can tolerate more plug/unplug cycles than handmade cables. Consistency is also better among factory-made cables.

However, we all have a lot more practice with CAT5 connectors than with CAT6 connectors, so practice with them is a great idea!

Ya agreed. Stranded for the racks not solid cable. Ideally only solid thru walls to punch down blocks. Then stranded from there to devices. Personally I have more experience with cat 6 then 5. I stopped using cat 5e like 5 years ago. Idk why anyone still F's with it. I tossed away 1000 ft spools.

I built a still in the back of the shop. On slow days we run off a batch of shine.

Plus...none of your techs signed up for car washing or Christmas light hanging or furniture moving. I can understand the occasional situation but every time you get slow would have me looking for a new job. If i wanted to wash cars i would work at a car wash. Wash your own damn car.

Calling previous clients will always get you some upgrades and touchups for things that have stopped working that they haven’t bothered to call you about. I have had two clients recently who changed cable TV providers and were using two remotes. They didn’t bother to tell me they had changed. Mention fun stuff like music around the house, Sonos, streaming video with Roku, etc.

Although I agree with you fully that you didn’t sign-up to clean your van, if you were an hourly employee and had a choice between straightening it up and shining it up versus staying home and not getting paid, what would you choose? Some employees would appreciate the chance to stay busy and get paid. They would also understand that the boss was not getting paid at that time, and would realize he was trying to help them out.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

Sounds like me with RG59, switching to RG6 in 1985.

You'd be a great person to ask: what connectors do you use? You may have already answered that in another recent thread, so I'm asking again.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I was referring to washing the bosses car, painting the bosses kitchen, mowing the bosses lawn etc. As far as I'm concerned keeping the van Clean and organized is as important as showing up on time. Employees should be thrilled to have down time at the office to do stuff like this. Same with product training...it's a gift from the boss.

And to be clear...I do all sorts of things for and with my boss and I don't have anything to complain about. I flashed back to my first AV job where the boss expected me to be a professional while picking up fish sandwiches for him between deliveries. I know guys who end up having to pick up dog crap at their bosses house because it's slow at the shop. IMO the quickest way to get rid of good employees is to treat them like low skilled day labor.

I just use SnapAV’s rg6 quad compressions. Silver in most applications. The gold plated in high humidity atmosphere’s. Seems to work fine.

I quit one job after they asked me to change the fluorescent lights in one of the guys office. He was too busy bidding on items on eBay to change it himself.

After already spending one day organizing inventory and being sent home in the morning on a couple of occasions due to no work, I told them I didn't go work there to change light bulbs and quit.

Felt great.

Hertz,
I've seen that work for some people, and other people have bit themselves in the ass with that attitude.

The speaker design/manufacture/AV chain I worked for had a speaker designer who knew electronics, and several times he was called on to troubleshoot and fix demonstration equipment in some of the stores. He finally started complaining, saying "this is not my job." This was stuff the company needed, that he could do, that was happening without interfering with his regular duties.

Well, sure enough, within a couple of months, it was not his job.

Probably the reason I never stayed more than 1 year at a job and why I work for myself. Also no one in my family works for anybody, we all have our own businesses.

Fixing demo gear is different then changing someone's light bulbs. I quit my first AV job after the boss told me he wanted me to sort months of invoices as punishment for daring to show up at start time instead of two hours early to listen to a physics lecture.

Lets add VERY WELL PAID employee's doing some menial task when things are slow.

If there was nothing more for me to do than wash the owners car, and I was making REALLY good money, I would be all too happy to be outside screwing around while making great money.

Hell of a lot better than being sent home and making nothing.

Well gotta say i've never used the ez ones. Just the legit cat 6 connectors. I've used monoprice with great success, i've used snap av's. I've used SCP's as their direct burial gel filled spool I bought has thicker coating on the pairs and a regular cat 6 connector won't cut it. Can't pass the pairs thru the separators. Too damn thick lol.

I don't like the ones with the three piece setup and the separator x bars.

I've kept the van clean and organized on my own time for ever so I would be more than happy to do it on the clock!!

The few times when there wasn't any work,I felt the pain for the owner's lack of income and was happy to do what ever needed to be done!(within reason)

Paint the showroom, install new flooring, fix the plumbing, upgrade lighting, fix his lawnmower or weed eater,no problem!

Pick up dog poop?
Get your kid to do that!
Every day is a good day.......some are just better than others!

Never feel pain for the owner. When he is raking it in you don’t share in the wealth. When they complain it’s slow and say see you in a week going on vacation or pull up in a new Benz. You feel bad? Bosses have learned how to lay on the guilt trip. So it is slow for a few days. Next week brings in 50k. STF up with the guilt trip shlt and I need to stay busy. Remember I’m salary buddy and won’t get paid more staying late next week on that 50k job you need done in 3 days.
Doing a little work around facility is not much to ask for. The rest, screw that.
