Weaknesses:It doesn't support ALL functions for my DVD Recorder....I still need that remote out for recording and editing dvd's.
Review:Love it! I've condensed 7 remotes into 1. Yes, it takes time to make it "learn" older devices and to program the buttons, but once that's done...Off ya go! It may be a little big, but still MUCH smaller than 7 remotes. I also like being able to setup system program buttons for different needs. System 1 - TV on, Cable on; System 2 - Tv on , Cable on, DVD on, Amp on....So easy when you want to watch a movie. I'm likin this toy!!

Strengths:....it would be nice (if it worked the way it supposed to).
Weaknesses:...poorly made and designed, poor lcd, real big....but mainly it doesnt work...i have programmed in micros...(they work)....a day later they "start" messing up...and keep getting worse...now they will not work at all...
Review:i spoke too soon in my last reveiw...it only worked "correctly" for a few days...if you get one that works you are lucky.....its too big...poor readability, hard keys dont light up....and the settings will not stay programmed.....so (pretty much)its a paper weight.....$200 paper weight...

Strengths:Refer to my comments just a few reviews down
Weaknesses:As previous review.
Review:I am adding an extra piece to my earlier review as I have now used (and bought) a Home theater Master MX 500 and using this unit has thrown my slight concerns with the Sony into sharper focus.
I mentioned in the Sony review that I had not seen anything better at the price. Well, now I have and I cannot recommend the RM-AV3000 now that I have had the pleasure of using the wonderful MX500.
The excellent review on this site says most of it for me, but I must say that the size, balance, legibility, strong build, neat design and ease of use of the MX500 makes it an essential item to check out. I use Sony ES equipment, but nevertheless, I find the MX500 much, much easier to use than the Sony remote. The Home Theater Master really does replace my other remotes, whereas with the Sony, I was often returning to the original remotes for one-handed use. The hard-button style (with custom labels) wins hands down over the hard-to-see Sony touch screen.
I'll say no more other than to urge anyone considering the Sony to also check the MX500 which, list price at least, is about the same price.
The Sony is a good remote.
The MX500 is an exceptional remote.
Simple as that.
In view of what the MX500 now offers me, I'm amending my Sony ratings as below. I now know there is something a lot more substantial at the price.

Strengths:Easily programmable, handled all my devices. Learn feature couldn't be easier. Quick Start foldout that consises the somewhat frustrating manual.
Weaknesses:A little heavy.
Review:I bought the remote from aaxes.com - $114 including quick shipping, slapped in the batteries and away I went. Programming was a breeze, the ability to customize buttons and remove those not used a piece of cake, a great feature for the wife. Just point the remotes at one another and Voila!, the Commander learned the signals. In just under an hour I had 5 remote controls programmed into it, without missing a key. It's loaded with features, too numerous to mention. Macros are also a cinch to program. I liked the solid design and the backlight, which is a must and programmable in duration, it's not so easy to read without it. As you'll find, by reading the other reviews, the manual is a bit wordy and can be a bit confusing. My Commander came with a fold out quick start guide, that really helps. I started with that, then refered to the manual if I needed. I don't know if it's something new, but the other reviews haven't mentioned the quick start guide. Not much to gripe about, everyone else does a good job at that. Should have no problems if your an avid vidoephile. Buy it and enjoy!

Strengths:Good design, excellent response time, customizable text buttons, quality feel.
Weaknesses:Screen readability, unprogrammable hard buttons.
Review:I bought it, programmed it, customized it, and returned it.

I could not read the preset button text without effort.

It reversed the left an right scroll keys for my Scientific Atlanta HDTV cable box. The scroll keys could not be programmed. It was a continuing annoyance to remember that if I wanted to go right, press the left scroll and vice versa.

Sony really needs a clearer more readable screen, like my Palm screen - a touch screen but with clearer darker letters. The technology is available at a reasonable price as proven by Palm.

Strengths:Macros, programmable hard buttons and certain labels on display. Once you understand manual, it's all super easy. The reach of the remote is incredible, it works accross my hallway
Weaknesses:not so cool looking and size. Display little harder to read. Not adjustable beep volume
Review:This remote completely replaced all remotes in the house (except the garage opener). I love that I can pretty much do anything with it. Understand that certain family members couldn't figure out how to turn everything on in my house. Now it's just one button. My TiVo doesn't have 30 sec commercial skip. Never mind, I will program a macro not for 30 second but for 45 or even a minute. All completely customizable. After you enter the preset code, you can still customize the keys and labels even though the keys' names cannot be changed. The labels (12 for each device) can be changed to whatever (I just used them for my favourite channels). Using display has one problem, I'm a quick TiVo surfer and need certain buttons handy so I don't have to look at the display every single time. So I reprommed certain hard buttons (exit, menu, mute, recall) to be my TiVo button, Replay, Guide and Clear. Works just great, I totally recommend it unless you want to impress your friends with a coold design (btw. the design is still better than anything previous from Sony)
