Review 2 made on Thursday August 24, 2000 at 9:25 PM. Strengths: Controls about anything. I have 10 devices controlled by this, including Digital Cable box. It is hard to find a good learning remote. This learns very easy, and has a few macro buttons. Volume, Channel, and Mute buttons are dedicated buttons, not on the screen. Each device button is also a dedicated button (not on screen) but can be configured to control any type of device. Weaknesses: Screen is hard to read for old eyes, I need my glasses. Small price to pay for not have a stack of 10 remotes near my chair. Price is so so, as I paid full retail for it...I want to see what I buy before buying it. Review: I have 10 devices to control. A stack of them is a real pain. Learning remotes at a cheap price are a thing of the past. The usual ones now are only "smart", with a couple of buttons to program...which makes them useless. I browsed the web and eBay, to learn about the new breed of remotes. So I decided to try to find a Marantz or Rotel locally. No luck. But one place had a very expensive Phillips (too expensive) and the Sony 2100. Off I went to check it out. I was impressed. It did every thing I wanted. Price? Well, at a list price of $179 plus tax it was a bit much. But the day's of cheap learning remotes is over. The new breed is more reliable and sophisticated. The current one I have (Radio Shack) always touted eight devices, but never worked right. This Sony worked right out of the box 100%. Manual was fairly good. I have a Sony TV and minidisc so that helped. Video stuff was preprogrammed with no problem, and needed a few learning sessions. The audio stuff is not listed in preprogrammed lists, but learning these remotes was fast and easy. I was surprised how easy this Sony was to program. I did need a few screen ICONS that did not seem to exist, but selected alternatives. The Sony preprogrammed items were not 100%, just a few learnings needed. I use it with a Rega CD player, Acurus amp, Sony minidisc, Carver cassette, Digital Cable Box, Sony 32" TV, two vcrs (Symphonic and Philips), a Panasonic DVD, and Pioneer LD. That's a lot. And some of the stuff is not on any remote's preprogrammed list. Sony handles them all fine. Now that I have grown used to the Sony 2100, I am glad I did not get the Rotel remote (or it's clones), or the Marantz. This is one nice unit. I like the hardwired buttons...12 device, volume, mute, and channel up/down. The fancy non programmable remotes are about $80+. For the step up in price, the Sony 2100 is worth it. Strengths: Great programming capability; easy to set codes for most existing products, making additional programming minimal Weaknesses: Hard to read without the backlight, which shortens batter life; definitely reset the time delay for auto shutoff--this can be a pain when it shuts off every 10 minutes. Review: Overall, this is the best remote I have owned (previous include the Rotel and Marantz). It has worked flawlessly with all my components with a minimum of additional programming.
