I have been using a Kenwood VR-509 reciever for 2 1/2 years now without any problems. For what it is worth, I didn't like the remote that came with the VR-509 and switched to a Sony RMAV3000 and changed over to IR only.
The Kenwood remote does both IR and RF...RF needs an antenna (page 19 of manual) The remote can be set to send only IR...this is what I did before learning IR codes with my RMAV3000. The switch is under the battery cover in the top right...there are 3 settings: 1) RF Band1, 2) RF Band2 and 3) RF Off. The next "trick" is that the receiver needs to be set the same way. Press and hold the SET UP key on the front panel of the VR-509 receiver for more than 2 seconds and release. After that, each time you press the SET UP key, the RF reception frequency changes as follows: 1) RF Band1, 2) RF Band2 and 3) RF Off. Match the Kenwood remote and the VR-509.
Beyond that, I would guess that there is a problem with the amps receiver.

I am floored. After being frustrated for almost two years with a Kenwood VR-507 and a RC-R0720 remote, I came across this thread. So I had to try it. Tapping is the answer. I cant believe it works! Im going to submit this thread to Kenwood. I emailed them about the problem about a year ago or more and they told me to reset the reciever and change the batteries in the remote. I wanted to punch the guy that responed to that. Anyway, maybe they'll look into it? Ill also cc the better business bureau to the link. If nothing else, maybe it will get someone to look at it.
On a brighter note, I was given an Apex AD-800 DVD player shortly after the reciever. At the beginning of SOME DVD's, the reciever keeps searching for sound type (I think) but never resolves it. So in the beginning (menu) and all of the extra features on some DVD's I have no sound. Any suggestions? (other than to buy a different DVD player)

tj It sounds to me like you have the digital sound set on your amplifier as "Auto"...try changing it to either "Digital" or "Analog" to match whichever input you have your DVD audio connected to.

I fixed my VR-507. It seems the only issue is some cracked solder on the pins that come through the curcuit board for the IR mechanism. I have a friend who is handy with such things and he soldered them right up for me and fixed the problem rather permanently. I can now resume my proper couch potato stance.
We took a picture of the circuit board. If anyone is interested, I can whip a quick web page together with instructions on what to do.

Andy I would love a pic of this problem. There are plenty of people around to fix it that arent "kenwood authorized service centers". It shouldnt be a problem since kenwood doesnt thing there is a problem. Im babbling...thanks!

Thanks plazman!
I was able to patch up the cracked solder on the IR receiver connections to the PC board. I am happy to report that the receiver continues to respond to the remote control for at least 2 hours straight now.

Hey there, I had my vr-507 in the shop for the problem with the IR signal from the remote not being recognized by the receiver after a few minutes or after a few hours. They had it for a while and could not duplicate the problem. When I got it home it was still failing to recognize the remote signal after variable amounts of time.I told this to the electronics shop and they called Kenwood and found out they are aware of this problem. Evidently, in this receiver, two of the three wires on the IR circuit were not soldered during assembly. After the soldering was done the receiver now works flawlessly. Hope this helps, as well!

I am having the same problem as everyone else but I have the vr-509. Does anything think the same problem that the 507 has applies to the 509? Could getting that spot soldered on my 509 fix the problem?

My taps turned into slaps, then into bangs, then into a cracked front plastic bezel on my vr 507 receiver to get it to work. After doing the fix I left the bezel off and took of the clips that attach it. I have the bezel sitting its position. I might reorder the plastc bezel and will only have to pop it back on.
When you said solder the three 'joints', I assumed you meant individually and not solder them together. It's hard to tell in your picture. So far it seems ok. Taking it apart isn't that easy. I had to tape the 'electrical ribbon' to the board because it kept slipping out of its connector. It slipped out after I did the fix and put the cover back together.. Those fools need to make those electrical ribbons longer.
So far, so good and thanks for posting this fix!!!!!!!!

Has anyone successfully fixed this problem on the VR-409? The symptoms of the problem are identical to what's described here, but the circuit board doesn't look quite the same as the one shown.
Thanks, Mike

Thanks, Mike I'm in the same boat. I have the VR-405, and the exact same problem as everyone else. I'm looking at my circuit board, and it's not exactly like the one in the picture. How do I identify the place I need to solder?

Okay, I figured mine out. I removed the circuit board from the bezel (8 or 9 screws on the circuit board itself) and found the IR sensor on the front of the circuit board. I then looked on the back of the circuit board at the corresponding location, and sure enough, I found three joints in a row, and some cracked solder on two of the three joints. I've never soldered before, but called someone I know, asked the technique, and had it fixed in ten minutes. This thing had been broken for three years. Good luck, mmoerk2. For anyone else with a 405 or any other model different from the 507, just find your IR sensor on the front of the circuit board, and look closely at the joints on the other side of the board at that location.
Can't wait to reassemble this thing and use my remote again!!!!!!!
