I am trying to use ProntoEdit v4.0.3 with my TS-1000 on a SONICblue ProGear web tablet running Win98 which doesn't have a serial port. I have a USB to serial cable, which is installed and working, but it loads up as COM5. When ProntoEdit tries to contact the RC, it can't find it and when I click Details, it only sees COM1.

I tried changing all occurrences of COM5 in the registry to COM3...that seemed to take (at least on the face of it), but even then COM3 doesn't show up in the Details window. Anyone else had a similar problem and/or a workaround suggestion?

Prontos are well known for being very picky about which Serial to USB converter you are using. do the following:

Highlight the following Bold Faced words>RT CLICK > COPY
(on the little rectangle at the end - Do NOT "Copy Shortcut")

LEFT CLICK ON THEM
PASTE them into the resulting Search Box, Change the time value to 1 Year
ENTER

+USB +SERIAL +ADAPTER

It will turn up a lot of information about USB to Serial adapters.

Click on the links in the box below, in particular you will find : the FAQ, Reviews, Play With It, Phases, Planning and ALIAS.CCF helpful when just starting out.

And remember when you ask questions to be specific in your Heading and very specific in your question, including precisely what your problem/question is and what model Remote you have and what OS you are using on your PC.

Also, don't forget the Search Forum at the bottom of the Page. It may seem slow but it is VERY thourough and don't be mislead by the "0%" you will see on the first screen, it is only a progress marker.

ProntoEdit will ONLY work with the com ports 1 through 4, and the remote must be connected to the first available port. The USB adaptor should also emulate "old style" com ports.

Note that you'll likely have to disable any infrared ports that show up as com ports (probably the com 1 it sees).

Daniel,

MANY THANKS! The key was the 'first available port' information. I just changed the registry entries from COM5 to COM2 (had previously done COM3, and of course that left a gap between COM1 and COM3 and so PE didn't see COM3). Works great now. Brand of cable is Startech which I searched for on this forum and no one seems to have, so perhaps this will help someone in the future. Also, I changed the infrared port to COM3 (don't know if I had to, but I did it per your advice to disable).

Now the big question: Why the %&$* isn't there just an option to override the auto-detect in PE and you can select any COM port name you'd like? It's not like this is version 1 of the software and given the trouble this has caused people, it seems like SUCH an easy and helpful add.

Oh well. Mine works now. Yeah! Thanks again.
