Hi again,

A fully-functional Super-Nudelist is finally available.

I still consider it a beta since only I have tested it and I'd like to add some fancy features before the "proper" release, but I'm confident that it's already the ultimate in Pronto CD/DVD/whatever list generators and I hope y'all find it useful!

Lots of details about features and changes and examples on the webpage, as well as the program itself and the C++ source code:

(For now, please use the ox.compsoc.net URL above instead of the other one I sometimes post. My Demon website is playing up at the moment by showing the old version of the page when access via certain URLs because of caching at the server end.)

Once I'm happy with the features and testing I'll put a version online here.

Leo,

I downloaded your original program about 2 weeks ago when I got my Pronto. I didn't have my CD Changer yet so didn't begin working with it til last night. It works well for me so far and I'm amazed at how little memory all the panels take for the CD's. I've only got about a third of them entered (about 110) so I'll continue to work on them this week.

Today I saw your new version and downloaded it. Seems to work well, took one GPF, but can't remember exactly what I was doing. I restarted it and it worked fine - the new CCF it generated was actually about 3K smaller than the one I last generated from your first program.

I've got a question or two though. Actually just looking for advice from an experienced user. I am using the Music Collector software available on the net to catalog my CD's - saves typing by hand (pop the CD in the computer drive and it will discover the ID of the disc then look it up on the web and import the Artist, tracks etc.)

Then I export that text listing to import into your utility. The problem is that once I add CD's to the list they will be sorted in the original software and hence assigned a new number in your program - I don't want to have to rearrange them in the changer each time I add a CD. Do you use any software to track your CD's other than your text file and if so how do you keep them in order or do you just add them to the end of a manual list?

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg, thanks for the feedback.

Did the GPF result from pressing execute with an empty list (i.e. without any discs in it), or choosing to delete all discs from the device resolution dialog? If so, I'm aware of that bug. If not, please let me know if it happens again so I can investigate.

I guess the discs numbers are being lost because you're re-importing the entire list each time and the text file doesn't contain disc numbers so Super-Nudelist is assigning them sequentially?

What formats can Music Collector export to? If it can export the disc numbers then Super-Nudelist should be able to read them in. (If not now, in the future. Once I've got CSV import and export done I might look at handling other formats people would find useful.)

Would it help if you could import a list and then merge it with your old one, so that you can import the entire list again but only have to provide disc numbers for new discs? Let me know if that sounds good. If it doesn't, I may have misunderstood the problem, but I'm eager to solve it, whatever it is!

Myself, I use the Super-Nudelist GUI to track my CDs (rather than editing a text file). When I get a new CD I just click Add Disc and enter its details without affecting the existing discs.

CDDB support has been suggested and is in the back of my mind, but it would be a reasonably large amount of effort and I'm not sure it's worth it when Super-Nudelist only stores disc titles. (I think most people can type a disc title in less time than it takes to swap the physical CD in and wait for the CDDB request. If Super-Nudelist ever supports tracks as well, CDDB would be much more important.)

There's always the possibility that Super-Nudelist morphs into some kind of fully-featured disc database, but I don't think I'm interested in that enough to see it through. (Still, if other people are, the source code is there.)

Cheers,
Leo

Hi Leo, I downloaded the beta version and works fine with my mp3 collections.(I treat song names as disks) and I get artist/song lists. The application could check for the event that a jump is specified to a panel of a device that is bond to be deleted because the list device that will be created has the same name. This leads to a ccf compiler error message that might be difficult for the average user to pinpoint.

Dear Leo,
Your program seems to solve a lot of problems, but I can't download your CCFDLL.zip file, it is an invalid archive file. Maybe it got corrupt for some reason. How can I get it anyway? The download of EXE program itself was not a problem.

Thanks in advance
Regards,
Hans-Albert

George, a good point which I've added to my to-do list. Thanks!

BTW, I've helped Hans-Albert via e-mail. I should also point out that the CCF DLL is the hard work of Olivier Couvreur, not myself.

BTW2, it seems the crash problem isn't caused by empty lists as I first suspected but happens whenever the device resolution dialog is used. (Which happens if you import a Nudelist list or delete an SN-Device, for example.) After a crash, running the program again and pressing execute works fine. Should be easy to fix, just been very busy the last couple of days.

Leo,

Sorry about being slow to reply again. I love the program - does just what I wanted. From your above post seems you've found the GPF - same place I could recreate it after importing a list and assiging a device. But reopening the program and continuing works just fine.

I was having problems with the sort because I was exporting from another program. Now that I have the list in your program I'll just update and add from there, no need to use the other program anymore.

Thanks for the hard work by you and others that have made this work. I love the 400 disc CD changer, but I really get the most use out of it now because I have this handy tool to find and play the disc I want.

One item I was going to ask about possibly for a future release. When editing the list and selecing buttons that I want a link created for - currently only the Devices are listed there. How about adding the Macros as well. I don't know if this is an easy thing to do or not, but would be a nice to have in a future release.

Thanks again,
Greg

Yeah, I completely overlooked macro devices and only noticed it a few days ago. It's on the list of things to do, but quite low priority at the moment since it's easy for people to work around.

(If you go to the macro side of my CCF you just get a big picture of Cartman which takes you back to the home panel. :-))

I have just made Super-Nudelist Beta 2 available for download from the Super-Nudelist webpage.

Until the "proper" release version is ready I probably won't post update news here anymore since it could become annoying and get in the way of other posts.

I have created a mailing list which you can subscribe yourself to if you want to get updates on Super-Nudelist in the future. The list allows people to add or remove themselves at their convenience and will hopefully make life easier for all of us. Details of how to sign up are on the Super-Nudelist webpage.

Many thanks to everyone who has provided feedback and support!

Leo - Fantastic Job. I'm actually in the market for a jukebox based on this tool and the power of my pronto. One question, Is it feasible to get down to the song level? I'd love to be able to drill down Artist -> Disc -> Song title.

Hnp: No song level at the moment; maybe at some point in the future. Some of the other jukebox tools do go down to song level but they're more difficult to use.

Mike: I've had at least one report of problems with ProntoEdit v2.0 CCF files, but for all I know other people are using v2.0 without problems. Either way, the issue is with Olivier's CCFDll and I think he is looking at it. So, if not now, soon. :-)

If anyone with ProntoEdit v2.0 uses Super-Nudelist, please let me know via e-mail how you get on, good or bad.

It's a real shame that Philips/Marantz don't release a proper SDK -- that would remove all these issues every time the CCF format changes. As it is, we have to find incompatibilities and then play catch up, which isn't good for anybody. Still, making stuff suitable for public use can be an effort and I can understand why it's the way it is.
