anyone have any thoughts on how to build a cable for USB connectivity?

Yeah... Build a standard serial to pronto cable and get a USB to serial bridge. USB is an entirely different beast, and would have to have circuitry to decode the "channel".

I can understand the original poster thinking maybe that a USB cable would be faster, but that's probably not the case... this *is* a remote control; I doubt serial speed is going to match that of an ISDN modem or something. Or were you thinking along the lines of the iMac?

The serial speed of the link to Pronto is 115 KBaud. The link is plenty fast enough for the occasional use of changing Pronto's configuration.
USB can theoretically manage 12 Mbps, but USB ports are not nearly as ubiqitous as serial ports... there's also the issue of adding cost and increasing power consumption if USB support were provided.

i have a mac G3 with usb and serial ports. i thought it might be quicker and easier to use usb to connect the pronto since usb auto configures.
