The serial speed of the link to Pronto is 115 KBaud. The link is plenty fast enough for the occasional use of changing Pronto's configuration.
USB can theoretically manage 12 Mbps, but USB ports are not nearly as ubiqitous as serial ports... there's also the issue of adding cost and increasing power consumption if USB support were provided.
