Hi,

First time poster... Be nice!

Ive been asked to program my fathers NevoSL for use with his Denon AVR-3806 to enable him to simply select between Zone 1, and Zone 2.

The only requirement is that CD Audio can be played either in Zone 1 (living/lounge room), or be swapped to Zone 2 (Outdoor Entertaining area).

Ive tried 'learning' the Zone 2 function, and performing some additional IR commands to select CD 1 afterwards, but it fails to set the Zone.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Many Thanks,
Greg Wright.

I have both the Nevo and a Denon 3806. I'm not clear on what you are asking. I have been able to learn the commands to turn on & off Zone 2. OR are you asking how to switch inputs on zone 2?

Hi Ckelly33.

I was able to get it to learn the commands to turn on and off zone 2 within minutes after posting (which is just so typical!) and thought I had some success with the configuration however Im getting some mixed results.

Initially, I had to insert a delay between powering up zone 2, which i had set at 500ms and seemed to work. Once I had enabled CD Audio to input to zone 2 via the nevo, I started to set up the same configuration on the TV. Basically I copied the buttons from the "Play CD in Zone 2" (a button to turn on z2, and select cd input, and volume/mute buttons) and renamed them on the TV screen.

When i attempted to use the TV buttons to direct sound from the TV to z2 it didnt work. Zone 2 seemed to ignore the commands.

I reduced the delay of 500ms to 100ms, and TV worked, but now the CD option doesnt work!

Im very new to this programming, in every sense. Is there something key that I am missing? Or is zone and input selection somewhat tricky?

Thanks for your assessment!

Greg.

I might add - what I have just learned is that since i have enabled TV input for zone 2, depending upon what input for the zone is selected first (ie; TV or CD Audio) will depend upon what the zone "locks" onto.

Can you suggest how I should be changing inputs with the Denon to ensure that changing from the TV source to the CD Audio source will ensure the change in Zone 2.

Also, turning off Zone 2 and back on doesnt seem to fix it - I have to power the zone down, then power down the amp, then turn it back on before I get to select the input for that zone again.

Wierd... I know its my programming, but I have been going all day now, and while the nevo is getting very cool, I am now getting stuck with the intracacies.

I would post the project if it would help, though I expect that is a bigger ask for a newbie!

Cheers,
Greg

I am not certain but it seems from your explainatin that you expect the pressing of 'zone 2' on the denon remote to emit an IR signal telling the rcvr that the next command should change zone 2. This is not the case, the denon remote has a set of on/off AND input commands that are different for zone two than zone one. Also on the 06 generation of denon rcvrs a 1500 ms delay between z2 on and the z2 input (or z1 on and z1 input) commands is more reliable (100ms will not work if the rcvr is in the off state).

Start by pressing zone 2 on the denon remote then learn all of the needed input commands, use these only when trying to change zone 2.

I hope this helps

Thanks j.

I will give this a shot - you are right that I didnt learn the command for the inputs specifically for zone 2. I have just found the denon binary (?) codes for the 3806 so I am about to have a play with trying to figure out how to enter the codes manually. Ill look right away to see if I can spot the Zone 2 input codes - that may well be my issue. I will have a good play with the delays and see if the longer delay helps too.

Id be very interested to see how others are developing their screens for the nevo - is there a file upload/download location where we can share projects to share ideas? (I might repost this if a search doesnt reveal anything as its kinda hijacking the thread...)

Thanks again,
Greg

See the above thread GTW. I'd gladly contribute my design to the cause.

Posted a message there. If we dont get any luck, I could host an ftp site for them I guess... My current (very much a work in progress) config is 1.2Mb - is that typical?

(Still trying not to hijack the thread!)

In response to JPuttcamp's post. I did what you suggested, and still have problems with changing to Zone 2's inputs. I have found the hex codes and implemented them using the IR Code Generator, but the Denon still doesnt seem to honour the switching of inputs AFTER its switched the first time.

ie; If I turn the amp off, and then on, the first Zone 2 input I select will stay selected. The remote codes I send dont seem to allow this to change. I added the "multi room" button, and can cycle through the options till I reach CD (say I had previously selected TV) and it wil change the input, but this is not "simple".

Can anyone send me a project snippet with how they have done the zone configuration???

Denon uses two maybe three different protocols for the the different zone source and volume selections. I found this out when configuring a JP1 remote for Zone 2 use. The protocol for zone 2 on and off is the same for main zone, but zone 2 vol and sources selection uses a different protocol. The data might look the same, but the protocol is different.

With that said, the learning function of the Nevo should take this into account. Make sure when you learn these zone 2 functions, that you preceed the command with any required button press, to possibly get it into that 2nd protocol. Just block the transmittion for that initial button press, and quickly learn the command before its times out.

The Denon 1906 and 2106 requires you to slide a lever toggle to operate zone 2 volume and source selection functions, it doesn't time out.

hope this helps.

Look in the Pronto NG Files Area for a Denon tool by Paul Friedlander. This tool will take the Denon code sniplet provided from their web site. Denon puts out all of their codes in a discrete format and Paul's tool will punch out the discrete sniplets into Pronto Hex. The Pronto hex can then be pasted into Nevo Studio for the particular Zone 2 commands you need. Then you can create a macro in NevoStudio to perform most of the functions you need.

Oddly enough, the Hex code produced cannot be copied (via a right click), much less pasted. I would really hate to have to type all this in "error-free". Is there some sort of secret handshake you have to excahnge with Mr.Friedlander in order to get this thing to copy & paste?
