That's encouraging news. Looking forward to hearing more about this.

I also saw a press release a few days ago, in which UEI and Niveus have hooked up to get the Nevo working with their systems.

Oke, sounds great.. but I have my media files
on a other computer, can I install there the Nevo
Media Server en install the player on my MCE machine,
would that work?

This is what I have:

1 PC act as a file server with Windows Media Connect
2 installed
1 PC with Microsoft Media Center 2005
1 wireless router
1 Nevo SL ;-)

Try this. On your Media Center 2005 PC, map a network drive to your file server using my network places. This will launch a wizard that will let you assign a unused drive letter (pick M for music if it is available or something in the middle of the alphabet will do fine) and then type in the path. The path should look something like this (\\file server\drive $ (Dollar sign means it is a hidden share, try it with and without)\folder name to where your music is stored. My path is \\myfileserver1\e$\ftp\files\my music. Also make sure to check the box to auto reconnect at log on. If the share connects successfully, the media center PC will new have a new drive letter assigned to it (look in My Computer). As a test, double click the new drive letter and you should link right to your music on your other PC. Now for the big test, try to do it with Nevo.
Things to note, for this to work, you must be an administrator on both PCs with admin passwords and all the machines must be configured to be part of your local network. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

Hi, Although I haven't tried it with Nevo. I know that a lot of software that I configure that needs some type of network file access will not work with an ordinary file share but will work with a mapped network drive. The difference is the software gets tricked into thinking it's just another drive on the computer instead of a share. Just wanted to make sure we are on the same page.

I am curious as to why the original poster wants to setup this way in the first place (two different computers). Why not just install the Nevo Media Server software on the file server directly?

I too saw the Nevo/MCE demo and it looks extremely promising.

According to Patrick (their main Nevo guru/trainer), they are going to obtain compatibility with Niveus machines first and then do a standard MCE plug-in release later on, but they didn't have release dates for either version.

The cool thing was that you'll now be able to browse recorded TV shows (the .dvr-ms files) on the NevoSL and control them playing back through the MCE interface (in addition to the other media types that NevoSL already supports like music, pictures, etc.). The demo they were showing at the booth was using a standard MCE machine and not a Niveus. I heard that Niveus was showing off the NevoSL's compatibility with their platform elsewhere though, but I didn't get a chance to check it out.

On a side note, they said that networked drives will most likely be supported in the next software release (v1.5), but they couldn't say for sure. For me though, one of the coolest things they enabled a little while ago was the support of removable drives (I guess networked drives was the next step). I can use my iPod as the media source (since it shows up as a removable drive), but, of course, the iPod has to have Mp3s running on it, not the Apple stuff. Heck, I was even playing around and had my thumb (flash) drive as a media source location and it worked!

What ever happened with the MCE/NevoSL integration?? From all I've read over the past week, there is still no way for a NevoSL to directly access the MCE music store and play music/videos/etc _through_ MCE. Worse, when I brought this up in Nevo training recently, not only did they say MCE wasn't directly supported, I got the distinct impression that they had no interest/plans in doing so. So what happened?

Wouldn't it need to act as an Extender in order to browse the pictures, music etc?

not at all ... what Nevo would need to create is an MCE-compatible app (middleware) that can interface with MCE. In fact, they're halfway there, with their "NevoServer" product ... all that needs doing is adding MCE support to this app, and allowing it to play not thru NevoPlayer, but the MCE interface. Granted, I'm not a programmer (although I was in a former life), but adding this support seems just slightly less than trivial.
