hey gang,

what i would like to find is a remote control that has only a small number of hard buttons on it (no LCD required) that can be re-programmed to learn any RF signal i want them to be from my other remotes.

what i have is a cd player and a preamp whose two sets of buttons i want to program into one, small, remote. so don't need many buttons (just some basic buttons for using a cd player with, and volume up/down for the preamp), but need to be able to program the buttons (obviously).

so, i see some cheap learning remotes out there but not many "small" ones. mostly large remotes with like 30 buttons.

or, i see pre-programmed remotes that do not allow me to manually program the buttons myself.

what would be really cool is a small remote, that is programmable, with a few buttons and also stylish as heck (willing to pay money for a cool-looking small remote).

any suggestions?

thanks,
george

You should probably be asking this question in the "Universal Remotes" forum.

what i would like to find is a remote control ... to learn any RF signal

There is no universal remote that can learn RF (Radio Frequencies). I presume you mean a remote that can learn from "regular" IR (Infra-Red) based remotes.

That said, The one suggestion that comes "close" to what you need is the MX-200 by Home Theatre Master. It doesn't learn signals directly, but you can teach it any commands from your computer. It used to be bundled with the MX-700 but I believe it's sold separately now. Used with the MX-700 you could accomplish what you want. If you don't have the 700, you'll need to find all the commands you want in the files uploaded by users in the files section.

Read about the MX-200 here.

eakf,

thanks for the reply. yea, i was just reading about that remote.

unfortunately, yes, it does not "learn" on its own. only through the MX-700 and a PC.

otherwise, that would have been a perfect solution.

i also was reading about the small Harmony remote, but that thing seems like a crazy hassle to program individual buttons for.

hmmm...

yes, sorry about my terminology... yes, i want a remote that can "learn" from "regular" IR based remotes.

any suggestions for units that are not "small" then?

thanks again,
george

Well, there's John Holmes, but he's dead. But Ron Geremy is still alive and kicking, if you're really into guys with big "units."

Hence, the reasons these questions are best asked in the "regular" forums :)
