Just a fun “unreal” conversation I've been having today. I must preface by saying that I *did* make one assumption before my first reply, that he had actually tried the program in question before emailing, and wasn’t finding any results.

He says:

Your web site says that "Macintosh Compatibility" is one of the items used in the Clicker Finder. But, when I go to the Clicker Finder, there is no way to find a remote that is Macintosh Compatible. Which remotes are Macintosh Compatible?

So, my assumption is that he's tried the program, and could not find any Macintosh-compatible remotes. Which is completely understandable since as of the last time I revised the program, there *were* no Mac remotes.

So, I say (I get a lot of emails, so I try to not be wordy):

Actually, it's working fine. :-)

Although just recently the Harmony SST-748 & SST-768 were updated with Mac support.

So, he responds:

All right smiley, below is a copy of your Clicker Picker web page. SHOW ME where you can CHOOSE MACINTOSH COMPATIBILITY below:

(Snipped cut-and-paste of Clicker Picker page)

Smiley? So, I respond:

You can't pick it right now because up until now there have been no Mac-compatible remotes, so it would have been a tease. There's only the two I mentioned below. When at least one more appears, I'll make it pickable.

Right now if you had two identical remotes, one with Mac support and one without, the Mac one would score slightly higher.

So, he responds:

All right then, it's NOT "working fine." So, why did you say it was "working fine," when it wasn't? Now I don't trust you..............

Since when did "Mac Support" ever score higher in this junk pc world? Especially if it is NOT an option to choose when you initiate the search.

So, I respond (once again assuming he's tried the program):

You were searching for Mac support and couldn't find any. That's because there wasn't any (except for the Harmony, which was only recently added).

The program takes many features into account. Only some are selectable yes/no.

So, he comes back with:

Man, you have a thick skull! I was NOT searching for Mac support because I CANNOT search based on that criteria because your clicker picker DOESN'T HAVE THAT SEARCH FEATURE! Can't you see that? How can I find something that your site doesn't have as an option to find?

So, "the program" KNOWS whether I want Mac or PC based compatibility, even though I CAN'T TELL IT THAT! Yeah right! Listen up here...........I have written thousands of lines of software for military satellites and I KNOW SOFTWARE CANNOT DO THAT! It's either a 1 or a 0 and unless it picks PC or Mac itself, without any input from me, it CANNOT KNOW WHAT I WANT.

You better get a different job where talking bull is useful, say politics. I thought Bill Clinton was bad.....................

A bit unexpected. But there's only two places where Mac Compatibility is mentioned - the "How it Works" page and the "Detailed Specifications / Side-by-Side comparison". He must have seen the former, and NEVER tried a search since he couldn't find those exact words on the search form.

But I'm kind of having fun (it's hard to take it otherwise), so:

Gee man, chill out. I think you're taking all this WAY too seriously. If you paid for access to the site and something like this wasn't working then you might have the right to insult me, but otherwise "you get what you pay for".

I've already explained in previous emails that you cannot search for Mac compatibility yet, as at last revision there were no remotes *with* Mac support. Your email prompted me to remember that the Harmony had recently added Mac support, and that I will make it a direct option as soon as additional Mac remotes are available.

I also explained that although there is no way to directly specify Mac support yet, the program will score remotes that have it higher than others (thus why it is mentioned as being "taken into account" on the help page).

When your first email said "there is no way to find a remote that is Macintosh Compatible", I figured that you had at least tried to look for "computer programmable" remotes (it does not specify Windows/PC, so I don't know why you'd think that the Mac doesn't qualify as a "computer"), and could not find any marked "Mac compatible" (one of the detailed specification items). Since there weren't any to be found, it was actually "working fine".

I see that you have a "mac.com" email address, which would indicate that you either work for or are close to Apple. It wouldn't have been much work to make "Mac" an option under "Should your new remote be computer programmable?" from your prompting, but if this is an example of how you guys foster support then I don't see why I should bother.

I should note that not being a Mac guy, I'm not familiar with how "mac.com" is actually used. But at any rate, this guy *is* a Mac supporter... and from an internet search, he also claims to be a "Scientist", "Engineer", "Military programmer" and "Former Marine".

So, I would have expected a bit more than:

What I take serious is HONESTY, STRAIGHT ANSWERS, NOT irrelevant babble that is made up; and, fun USEFUL discussions. I help you and you help me. I shouldn't have to PAY for that. I never said, and you never even asked what I originally searched for. Oh, I guess it's like your program that ASSUMES HIGHER IMPORTANCE for something NOT ASKED FOR. No, I have nothing to do with Apple. That shows how much you know, which obviously isn't much. I never heard so much bunk in all my life. You assume this and you assumed that. Please, don't bother any more and go back and study READING and ENGLISH! Your brain is so bass ackwards that you don't even know your own web site. There's nothing worse than a person who acts as if he knows something, when he's really just passing as a phoney. I'm off of this web site for good and I'm
telling everyone I know how untrustworthy it is...............Please shut it down and go back to school................

Since I no longer give this guy any credibility, this is fun in a “Nigerian email scam” sort of way, so...

Obviously you did not actually try the program before sending off your email complaining about no way to find a Mac compatible remote, since all you would have had to have done is specify "computer programmable" and then looked for the ones marked "Yes" under "Mac Compatible". It's that simple.

Yes, I assumed you had already tried the program - obviously wrong. But you assumed there was no way to do what you wanted, when there was - just not from the front page. Ever since then you have been hostile and confrontational, despite my best efforts to clarify the situation in a peaceful and increasingly detailed matter.

"I never said, and you never even asked what I originally searched for."
You already said: "Which remotes are Macintosh Compatible?" So that's what you were searching for.

"Oh, I guess it's like your program that ASSUMES HIGHER IMPORTANCE for something NOT ASKED FOR."
That's right, it *does* place a level of importance on features not specifically asked for, as long as they don't directly contradict other requirements.

"No, I have nothing to do with Apple."
I'm relieved that I was mistaken.

"I'm off of this web site for good and I'm telling everyone I know how untrustworthy it is"
I must be a glutton for punishment, but I must ask: what are you still not clear about, or where do you feel there is inaccurate information?

And that's where we are. I, for one, certainly won’t miss him...
