Hey people, I am studying for my A-level, Product design in England and have chosen to redesign the universal remote control. I was just looking for information on the materials used to make the current remotes and if you have any suggestions on what materials you would like to see a remote manufactured out of, e.g. Stainless Steel or ABS plastic. Any information and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Laz

When you say redesign, do you mean the casework or functionality (or both)? You might also like to check out this thread (he says with tongue very firmly in cheek). questionswhat type of remote (touchscreen is much different then buttons) ideas Metalic is cool (aluminum), but if it is plastic make sure it is not painted. some kind of rubberization is good for an easy grip ----- this might be a good idea for the remote [Link: avsforum.com]

For pointers I would start looking at successful designs. In the UK although not a universal remote (but you can get it to work most TV brands) I would look at a remote almost every body can pick up and use and is well laid out and very robust like SKY digital remote. I would then look at how people program universal remotes part of the success of the pronto was the fact it was quite "open "you can set it up and customize it to your taste. most of the so called universal remotes i.e. one for all have built in remote codes but they often don’t work every feature and cant perform complex macros .Cost has a great bearing on what you can achieve you wont be able to build a colour touchscreen R.F / I.R. universal remote for £30.00 most successful designers have to know what market your aiming at. If you’re not clued up on remotes you might have bitten off more than you can chew!!

Thanks for your replies, the remote will be controlled by hard buttons but with a small display screen. As this is only A-level and the small amount of time needed I will only be designing the outer shell.

Mary 1) wrong thread: your post has nothing to do with the original question, and has nothing to do with the current conversation. You should start a new thread with a good descriptive title of the problem 2) wrong forum: this is the intermission forum and by definition Where you can talk about anything not already covered by one of our other chat forums. what you want is one of the remote related forums like the general remote forum or one dedicated to the universal you have 3) you did not give enough for any one to be able to help. There are countless URC out there and each is different.

First, I suggest you follow the previous advice and start a fresh thread in a different forum. And give the brand and model of your remote control. Most universal remotes do not have extentive commands in there database, you may have to program the remote with a special cable connected to a computer. Give as much details as you can in your new thread. O

My remote works without pushing any buttons, but she is very expensive to maintain.

Alas mine rarely comes out of standby, but I don't mind. Means I can sneak in the odd new thing or two without her knowing.
