I am hoping to get an unmodded Pioneer DV-F727 from the US and have it modded over here in the UK. Has anyone on this list done the same ... and do you know if there are any problems associated with converting a region 1 unit to play region 2 discs? Techtronics say that if this machine has not got a PAL chip, it will only play back region 2 discs in blacka and white. Most US retaillers of modded players day that the modded 727 will only play NTSC discs on an NTSC system and PAL discs on a PAL system. I am confused ...

It appears this player does not have a conversion circuit, so it cannot play NTSC discs on a PAL-only TV. I know PAL TVs can at least see NTSC signals, but they may be correct that it only comes through in black and white. I seem to recall some problem, but I'm in the USA and have never dealt with it. These retailers do mod it for regions, though. Does it have to be this player? Megachangers are not often the best choice for an all-around player.

Perhaps there is a European version, might even have a different number. Sometimes the European version has the conversion circuit when the USA version doesn't. But I couldn't say for this particular model.

I have two Pioneer 727s (daisychained) modified to play all regions, and you are right, the output is NTSC only. So you either need a TV (or other display device) that can show NTSC properly or you can buy stand alone converters. I bought one on the net (can't remember where) for $29 dollars and that works fine.

I'm looking for a firmware update for this model (DV-F727). I have two of these I bought in 2001 that doesn't do a good job playing DVD-R/+R discs. Can anyone point me to the right direction? I've tried contacting Pioneer. They refered me to a local 'service provider' who didn't even know what I was talking about until I explained it to him. He then told me they cannot do anything until he gets permission from Pioneer. So, the classic run-around. I'm hoping someone out there has the firmware file he can just send me (I'm also hoping the units can be updated via the disc loader).

Thanks,

Ben
