There already is a link to search the file area... it searches for files containing the same model number. For discretes, it'd actually be better to take the discretes FROM the file area and put them into the appropriate place in the Wiki, since they're stored generically in the file area and could be model-specific in the Wiki.

I'm not sure about firmware revision notes - maybe that could just be part of the general notes?

I'm still working out how I'd do file uploads. I can't really allow general uploads that are instantly available for anyone to download, but I could allow direct uploads to the site that would then be "approved" for download. This would be done by "Wiki Masters", and I'd be looking for a number of volunteers to fill those roles - not right now, but eventually. :-)

Excellent job Daniel. For discrete power it might be nice on the detail page(not component browse page) to designate if there is a work around (i.e. Play = Power On, Play, Pause, Power = Power Off or number pads for the cable boxes.). I wouldn't consider Play a power discrete code. Maybe you can have a Yes with an asterisk that says look at notes.

Also maybe there should be something for RS232 that is the same that designates a device requires 2-way communication. A device like the Sirius SCH2P comes to mind.

OK, I've being doing a lot of work on this (locally, changes haven't been posted on the site yet). File uploads are a bit more complex than they might sound, but I should have something by the weekend.

For discretes: In addition to the current "Yes/No/Not Applicable" options, I've added a "Workaround" selection. The workarounds themselves would be added to the notations section.

For RS-232: would simply expanding the current "RS-232" tickbox into separate "RS-232 (1-way)" and "RS-232 (2-way)" tickboxes be acceptable?

Anything else come to mind?

A device could be 2-way but still work 1-way. However there are devices that only work 2-way. Thoughts?

Well, these would be individual tickboxes, like IP (Wired) and IP (Wireless)... so if 2-way was required, don't tick the 1-way box... and if both work, tick both boxes.

I had initially figured maybe a drop-down list (like the number of IR codesets option), but if components could ONLY work 1-way, or ONLY work 2-way, or work BOTH, then individual tickboxes might be the way to go.

Also remember that I've tried to make it fast to fill out, so it pre-enters information where it can. For example, if you're browsing Sony Blu-ray players when you create a new entry, it'll prepare the form automatically for a new Sony Blu-ray player (and can of course be changed). And if you're filling out devices that are mostly the same, just go to an existing component and click the [Duplicate] button down in the Wiki Toolbox. It'll copy everything except the model number.

I can see this being very useful. Pictures would be cool - especially if we could get people to add high-res pictures of the rear of components. That would be very helpful.

Thoughts on my RS-232 question?

Are there 1-way only components? 2-way only components? Components that work with both?

I think there should be a "Control" section with items with a radio button that can be checked off for a specific control feature.

Features can include the following:
IR
RS-232
TCP/IP
RF (Proprietary)
Bluetooth
12V Trigger
IR In
IR Out

They can be spaced horizontally to save space and each can be simply checked off (or be off by default)

I'll add my desire for a upload section... being able to add RS-232 protocol documents, pictures, etc... would be very nice...

and getting manufacturer participation would be even better!! I know we have guys here that have ties to factory reps, and trainers....

Vincent: could you explain that further? I'm not sure I'm getting your point (versus what is current there)...

As for file uploads... just getting the finishing touches on that. I was without power from 5PM yesterday to 12 Noon today, so not much work was happening... :-/
