On one of the Escient Setup screens, (I believe the one with the IP address settings) you enter the host name for the Escient.

If you have done this an it is not working, then please post the brand and model of the router you are using so others may benefit from your experience.

I had weird issues with the Pronto not finding the Escient via hostname. It's set as "Escient" in the Escient settings. However, (if I'm not losing it) I found you needed to add it to the Pronto Escient Network settings with the exact same capitalization (case sensitive). Case should not matter, but it did for the Pronto. So, unless I just encountered another network issue which resolved itself while making this change, I think this may be a bug.

Perhaps someone can test this and verify, my Escient here at work is offline.

During the beta test Lyndel reported a bug regarding this if I am not mistaken. Perhaps he has received some feedback on this from the Prontoteam since the beta test ended.

I think that the casing is important and should be observed. AFAIK, on a webserver that is unix/linux-based, proper casing is required. The problem I had with my setup was that my PC (running my custom media server) was not properly registering itself in the router's DHCP table but rather was using Netbios lookup.

FYI, my Linux guy at the shop sent me this when I asked re: case sensitivity...

Case sensitivity shouldn’t be an issue with any DNS client, being that unix/linux/bsd/windows. They should all send the same data to the root dns servers (query: A www.YahOO.com).

But it is not case sensitive (nor should it be), I have not seen this issue across any os that I have used.

nherc,

Thanks for the update. I do know that the path of a document is case sensitive on linux (folder + docname) but as you pointed out, it is good to know that DNS is not supposed to be case sensitive.

Hi everyone,
I am completely new to 'Escient'. But as this is the only supported Server for the 9600 at the moment worth a look at. I am looking for a solution where I need at least two music server streams. how could I solve this? would I use two escients? Can I control TWO Escients with the TSU9600? I tried it in the pronto edit simulator and it looks like it could do it... but knowing would be better.
regards
Stephen

Yes, it can control 2 escients. If you need 2 streams, you will need 2 escients.

I was visiting to my local distro... it seem that the Fireball on display has "just quit for now. It happened once before and just came back after a few days..."

My snotty reply... "and that would be why we don't sell it!"

The interface with the RTI K3 was pretty good. There were obvious glitches and bugs. But It was pretty cool, what parts actually worked. Then it dies about 3 days later...

Bonus points.. need to rip a disc... it stops playing! SWEET.

DVD management is still a little bit off in terms of the Pronto Module. When that actually works.. well that will be a real solution. I am no fan of DVD changers due to long load up times and the inability to find discs. Being able to cue or just plain pick with the 9600 is what they used as a selling point. Several of my local dealers dove in only to find out that it didn't actually work, yet. Lydel has a similar interface... or something that actually works with your own media PC... Right?

When Philips gets that module for DVD going I will probably start changing over my graphics.

Do other have issues with Escient being flakey. I never liked them due to issues I stumbled over from the first unit I ever saw to the unit s I got to test, to the unit I was stuck with because someone thought it might work... Bascially every unit I have delt with or seen had some FLIGGIN GLITCH. Just made me look into other solutions.

Sonos crushed it for a music server. Cost not an object... but the Escient was a lot more expensive. More expensive with a weaker interface and not nearly as robust in terms of up time. If the cheaper thing works better...

Yes, Springs, a Music-Only interface. I don't route DVDs through my PC.

Interesting I have five Escient devices in my system and have never experienced them going to "sleep" for any period of time, The next time it does this you should call tech support at Escient they can Telnet into your box and take a look at what is happening. I know ther were some issues with bad values in some sleep loops that affect some units, what version of the software are you running?

bOObie,

That is actually at the distro. A display piece. All it does is have a flashing red light on the front panel and the ethernet jack does not light. I didn't check yet if the switch show connectivity. But the fact that the display is dead... and they leave it there.

Yeah I want to have that in my rack. Or worse my customers...

We are pretty new with Escient so I don't have much history to go by. But we have sold/installed 8 or 9 musics servers this year. Knock on wood, not a single issue.

I have an SE-80 in my truck that I am going to set up here at the house again. I had a SE-80 and an FP-1 running for about a week or two here as well.

You are right about the burning and playing issues, I am always doing a quick load while at a clients house.

Stopped in today and its working again...

"Umm what changed???"

Ohh its a known problem with Escient.. we called them up and they overnighted a fix.

"What was the fix?"

Ummm... I don't really know as I didn't handle it.

"Ok then... I will email the branch manager and see if he has a clue what happened..."

I really don't like MAGIC as an answer.

Answer was you had to replace a Power Supply Cable. So they had to open up the case and install something that looks a lot like a computer power supply wire. No soddering or anything...
