Well, I'm afraid I'm going to need a little help. I've had my mx-850 for several years and have programmed it for many devices but I have to admit that I have not used the IR database before. I have read the editor manual several times for using this feature and I'm really not sure exactly how it works. So,...
Lets say that I want to get the discrete on and off codes for a Sony receiver.
I go to the ir data base, pick the device for which I want the codes to apply, and (as was suggested) go to Audio-> Sony-> Sony 40 (code 703) and hit save. The button editor comes up. I select the p-off key, hit apply, close the following window and repeat the whole procedure and do it for the p-on key ? Is this correct ? It seems that I cannot select more than one button at a time. I'm sure that I am doing something incorrectly, but not sure what.

Whine on:

Please excuse my "whining" here, but in this day and age, I have a hard time understanding why the mx-850 editor is so clunky and unintuitive. Everytime I need to use it I have to go back and scour the manual. Dont get me wrong, I love the remotes and have ordered a 950, but its just hard for me to believe that the company cannot make some more intuitive software.

Whine off

You still don't give us a clue why you need these codes. Is it because you want to use them in conjunction with a device you've already created for your sony receiver or add a new device all together?

The right way to go about this is to:

1. create a device called ZONE1 (or AMP or AVR or whatever you like)
2. click Save
3. Single click ZONE1 in the device tree on the left
4. Open the IR DB and ensure it's for ZONE1 and AUDIO for the IR data
5. Choose Sony under brand
6. Choose STR-DA5200ES (MAIN) under the model
7. Click Save, then Apply, then Close
8. You now have a device created with IR DB commands for ZONE1
9. On page 4 of that device are discrete power commands.
10. Load to your remote and test, if they work you can now use this device to
relate to your macros, punch-throughs, etc. Most that use these remotes for activity based use, will put this device on MAIN page 2 and hide that page and only use the device via references in the macros, punch-throughs, etc.

The software wasn't really intended for consumers. Seasoned installers in this biz can build these remotes out over breakfast for most systems, more complicated...have another cup of coffee :-) Your 950 that you ordered has the same programming scheme with added features of press and hold macros and variables, color and simple graphics changes...that and it loads much quicker. Best of luck.

Thanks tweeterguy--I really appreciate your help. I allready have a device set up for my 5300ES and I just wanted the discrete on/offs at this point. I'll set up a new device as you suggested for the 5200 and if the discretes work, I'll copy them to the 5300. I think I see how this works now. The part that confused me was the button editor that comes up after the Save in step #7, but I suppose its just so you can rearrange the buttons before you finalize the device ?

I'm looking forward to the 950, but I'm mainly getting it because it is rechargable. My 850 seems to consume batteries pretty quickly and one of my devices, an hd dvr cable box, really misbehaves when it gets weaker signals.

I realize the software is intended for installers and also that even the clunkiest of software is easy for those that are familiar with it. I write software for a living and a lot of it is clunkier than the UR editor :).

That is correct.

Re: your software vs. this. It is quite amazing how different programmers can handle different programming. Throw some perl at me and i might as well be reading Chinese.
