Looks like I'll have beach front property!

Damn! No matter where I set it I get no beach. HMMM...14 meters in sea level rise (45ish feet) and I am still 30 miles from the beach. Maybe we need to go back to the old freon and hairspray.

Alan, don't do it! The initiation (having been brought
up a Catholic) with Sister Mary Alice rapping your knuckles
with a ruler is quite painful! :-)

I SECOND THAT, NOT TO MENTION YOU'LL HAVE TO BE MOLESTED BY A PRIEST AS WELL

Yeah but you got that BMW suv. You dont need no stinking convertible anyways.

Dont you know that with global warming you should not drive a convertible! not to mention we will be in an instant ice age in a few years directly related to global warming......

Sorry had to bring this back on track.

Maybe your sources of info on global warming are as inaccurate
as your history book.

I personally agree that it is a FACT that there is Global Warming. Got me confused with another guy perhaps?

As far as the history books go it WAS taught in US elementary schools for over a century all due to a book by Washington Irving, and some historical facts thrown in with his fiction book.

For well over two thousand years, people have known not
only that the earth is round, but also how big it is.

I would agree that "most" of the educated people by the 1st century knew the world was round. And as far back as 6BC for some Greeks. YET that was the educated and the around the 3rd through 7th centuries the debate kept comming back up again and again.

Kind of like we have here. Some people say we do not have it, some say we do. This facts say this..... ect. But that does not change the fact that we are in Global Warming. IMO

When people thought Columbus would fail, it was because
they knew he would use more than half his supplies going
much less than half way to India (so he would then starve
if he went forward and starve if he turned back). Same
again years later for Magellan.

Agreed.

The argument was never flat vs. round. It was always
correct size vs. smaller. Columbus and Magellan both
thought the earth was much smaller. Both were wrong.
Columbus got lucky (but he was still wrong). Most of
Magellan's crew starved (and Magellan's death was a fairly
direct result).

Agreed they thought there was Europe and Asia making up 180 deg and the other 180 deg was water.

As for global warming: the science that says it is due
to CO2 from fossil fuel isn't real science. It is a bunch
of guesses strung together to try to reach a conclusion
that was selected for reasons other than evidence.

agree again. There are too many factors like the billions of people spilling out Carbon as well as our cars. There is a TON of factors.

That doesn't make me certain it is false. But it doesn't create
the confidence in its truth to justify starving our economy
while we find out.

That was kind of the point that I was making about the Eng Mech at the local Ford Dealer. Change positive and slow is what we need.

I am sure that the debate here is not so much whether global warming exists as to who or what is the cause.

Ed summed it up quite well with the lakes/ice caps.

No one around then to moan about their valleys flooding. Nobody around to raise taxes to pay for the exodus of poulations from those valleys.

And were still here.

OT: I see that ED has made it *very* clear who his alias is by mistakenly using caps in his own last post.
Sticking to what I'm good at.

FYI, I don’t consider myself a Republican. I’m most likely a Libertarian if I understand things correctly. Here’s my take, as cynically as this sounds. Politics is a pretty cynical business after all, though:

Global warming is to Democrats what national defense is to Republicans. GWB won in ’04 because the GOP convinced voters that they faced an imminent threat that Democrats didn’t fully appreciate. Democrats know they need a platform that is more than old fashioned Great Society programs. Universal healthcare is a yawner for many. While Old Environmentalism to many meant designating crosswalks for grass snakes and pissing off cattle ranchers, New Environmentalism is, quite literally, a Hollywood movie. It has urgency, it’s life & death, it’s a call to arms. It’s the one issue they can call their own that might have traction that transcends party affiliation. After all, no one in Peoria wants to drown in their beds when the Atlantic or Pacific comes knocking at their front door. Republicans have been rolling their eyes at “tree huggers” for years and just when you think you’ve seen it all, it’s been reinvented into something politically formidable. Democrats may be perennial losers on national defense but, no matter, they own the environment and, hey, it’s about winning. They worked their ass of going into ’04 and gained less electoral and popular votes than ‘00. The difference? Though I voted for Gore, in hindsight both candidates were equally lame. The difference was Republicans had the Global War On Terror and Democrats had, um..…They need to change things up, big time.

I'm not Catholic but my wife (er, ex wife is)... My son went to Catholic school up through 8th grade...
Pretty strict place (which is good, I think)... One day he took out the garbage with his friend, and the bag of garbage was found up in in a tree by one of the teachers...

My kid and his buddy had to clean the girl & boys bathrooms, and to finish out the job, were given toothbrushes to clean around all the toilets and junk! Took them (2) days, then they had to clean the Principals bathroom!

He had this kindergarten teacher (she was the last nun there -- Sister Patty)... the kids were all scaed to death of her, because she was downright mean... I kept telling my son he must be exagerating about her, but then once I had to go talk to her one time & I was scared!!! If you could imagine Ben Franklin in a dress --- that was what she looked like - complete with whiskers!!!

My son still has bad dreams about "Sister Patty"!

I was raised Catholic, and spent 8 years in Catholic grade school. My family actually rented a house (the old convent) on church property in the southwest suburbs for two years. My school and the church were across the parking lot, the convent across the lawn and the rectory across the driveway. A surreal experience, and I use it to explain my intermittently odd behavior.....

I wouldn't be a huge supporter of "polls" but here's one that I reckon is pretty spot on when it comes to peoples attitudes to global warming (from my own experience)
