My response was simply that the earth has displayed cyclical temperature changes throughout history including extended periods where combution engines did not exist. Sure it has, but there has been a specific, very gradual averaging out of the temp changes... What we are experiencing is a huge logrythmic peak in a totally compressed time frame, and it is not leveling out - it is climbing faster than the frequency plotting of a really cheap tweeter.

Yeah, get back to me when it actually reaches an all time high, so I can reiterate that there is nothing that can be done about it. Oh, there is one thing, you can buy my carbon credits.

Yah, except from 1945 to 1975 when temps dropped at the same time when the CO2 content in the atmosphere increased. Speaking of CO2, atmospheric content increased steadily throughout the 20th century, even during the great depression when manmade CO2 emmissions dropped.

Clark did ask for facts, here ya go. Well... every year since 1992 has been warmer. The 10 hottest years on record have been in the last 15 years. Since 1917 the median average temperature has continued to climb. Even Shell Oil & BP Oil attribute the temperature increases to the use of fossil fuels. The world population is now 6.4 billion. The world population has doubeled since 1959 --- meaning more cars and industrial air-borne pollution, increasing the greenhouse effect. I personally don't worry about it too much for MY sake (and yeah that is a selfish attitude), because I won't be around in another 40 to 50 years... but for my kid's sake I am concerned, and his kid's sake. I have no vested interest in the "selling" of global warming, other than the fact that I am pretty alarmed that it's not just a few politicians, and save the whale types who are throwing up the red flags... It is the majority of scientists worldwide. I agree that the buying and selling of carbon credits is a joke, and those people can screw off.

Speaking of CO2, atmospheric content increased steadily throughout the 20th century, even during the great depression when manmade CO2 emmissions dropped. But you will gloss over the obvious non-relation of CO2 to temps and the proliferation of internal combustion engines, and instead read and let your suction cups grab this: On May 4, 2007 at 02:07, Mr. Stanley said...
Well... every year since 1992 has been warmer. The 10 hottest years on record have been in the last 15 years. A 15 year cycle is barely relevant at all compared to a century or more. Check back in 10 years when it takes another dip. Since 1917 the median average temperature has continued to climb. It's cyclical, and can't be directly correlated to cars, factories, or people. Even Shell Oil & BP Oil attribute the temperature increases to the use of fossil fuels. So?? Fossil fuels were not used before the last 15 years? C'mon, you said you were going to look into this more thorougly. People our age are responsible for thinking clearly to counteract the young twits who refuse to think things through at all!! :^) On April 28, 2007 at 13:25, Mr. Stanley said...
...And like I've said earlier --- I AM beginning to look more clearly into the "Global Warming" issue to see if it IS just a bunch of Granola Eating / Birkenstock Wearing / Greatful Dead fans who are "Spinning" a big line of B.S. There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions. |

My favorite line: "We have a stake in [America's] survival and its success and we ought to nurture it, not bring it to its knees or delight in its misfortunes."
I love that Europe still claims some active paternal stake in the US after a few hundred years, as their own native-born populations shrink under low birthrates and immigration, and as our own country increasingly reflects the cultures of its more recent non-European immigrants.
Europes's preoccupation with the US says much more about its own deep feelings of self-loathing than anything else. Ah, so if they have an opinion about the US it represents a "preoccupation and deep feelings of self loathing". Got it. Your sweeping and absurd generalizations about them on the other hand are of course completely enlightened an unbiased.

While I know that this whole global warming this is a crock (Thon and Tom say so after all) it's in the news quite a bit today: hhttp:// [Link: boston.com]Not saying I am endorsing the article above one way or the other [I just want to say that before being accused of being some tree hugger for posting an article about global warming ;-)]. Just thought I'd post a link since it's being covered in all the major papers.

Under the most stringent scenario, the report said the world must stabilize the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by 2015 -- eight years from now -- at 445 parts per million to keep global temperatures from rising more than 3.6 degrees over preindustrial levels.
Woudn't you expect a rise in temp over preindustrial levels since the industrial era began at the end of the mini ice age?

The mini ice age ended some 5-10 thousand years ago. There was a very interesting interview on the radio this afternoon with a climatologist that talked about inflection points in historical climatological events, where once a given level of greenhouse gases were present the average temperature spiked up dramatically. According to him we are potentially nearing a tipping point.
