Hi all,

I read through the many threads on this subject, where the IR receiver on this tivo is overloaded by the output from an IR emmitter.

I am helping a client with this problem and we are experimenting with the various positions for the emmitter, etc.

I did notice the unit does have an IR mini plug input on the back. The manual indicates it is for future use. Has anyone tried using it ?

Any new tricks you may have found on this issue?

Thx Dave

Dave,

The IR jack on the back would more likely be an IR output to control external devices like on a stand alone TiVo and I don't see that happening..... Ever.

What we have found works really well is covering the IR window with electrical tape (before you put the emitter on). In the center of the window leave a very tiny slit between the two pieces of tape. Test it out and adjust the slit. The slit will be more larger or smaller depending on the amount of ambient light in the room or whether or not it is going in a cabinet, etc. We have pretty much gotten this down to a science and works great! Now just use a little silicone to keep the emitter in place and you are all set. You may also want to cover the emitter with an emitter condom or more electrical tape. But isn't always necessary.

I hope that helps!

good luck!

The last one I did I put the emitter beside the window and covered it with tape to keep it there. The tape overlapped the window in the process and the functionality has been good.

I have never had Issues with Directv and IR, we usually place the emitters inside as close to the IR receiver as we can

I actually did a H20 yesterday and had no issues as well as several HR10-250's and R15's and all of the other models previous

I have put emitters inside at least 20 HR10-250 with no ill effects. More likely culprit is that you are emitting dirty codes.

Unless Universal Remote is spitting out garbage this is a pretty consistant thing with them and prontos. Since he asked about mounting outside that is what I suggested.

But I agree inside is really a much better way to go. We have no issues with modified units with Crestron. Works great!

With Pronto's, RTI, and Crestron we put a dab of silicon on the eye. Set the emitter in the little concave pocket and an IR cover. Works fine...

Rant...

What in the hell were they thinking with the concave eye on the TiVo and the little bubble on the H-20.

If anybody from D%^ Tv read this, please pull your collective heads out of your rectum when designing these boxes.

I can't agree with you more....lamest thing I've ever seen.

That being said, I no longer put the emitter on the lens. I have been putting them just left of it for a long time now and it works perfect.

One way that I have used to solve this problem is to use an emitter cover from Xantech. First I bend the cover to create "legs" that I can glue to the box over the ir window. Second I glue the emitter to the inside of the cover and then glue it to the box. This puts roughly an inch of room between the emitter and the ir window and decreases ir overload. I have done this on several Direct boxes and it works perfect everytime. I have used this method with URC remotes and even a AMX touchpanel as well. Hope this might help someone down the line.
