One way that I have used to solve this problem is to use an emitter cover from Xantech. First I bend the cover to create "legs" that I can glue to the box over the ir window. Second I glue the emitter to the inside of the cover and then glue it to the box. This puts roughly an inch of room between the emitter and the ir window and decreases ir overload. I have done this on several Direct boxes and it works perfect everytime. I have used this method with URC remotes and even a AMX touchpanel as well. Hope this might help someone down the line.
