I have an F-150 (only 1/2 ton you can get with a crew cab and 6.5' bed) and can fit a lot of stuff inside the cab. The back seat folds up, completely out of the way and no hump! Interested to see how you build it out.

Ive got trucks and a van. 95% of the time I take the van. HANDS DOWN much more manageable, convenient, useful. But to each his own.

Are you getting a commercial cap on the pickup or is that not allowed? Your going to lose a lot of height with a regular cap if you go that route.

Brendon, welding is easy -- as long as you're welding same type of metal and similar thickness. As always, practice makes it perfect.

There is no way that working out of a truck is better than a van/box truck. I don't care what gimmicks you put, sliding draws, cabs and all. If you can't get into the vehicle and walk around while accessing 4-6' worth of bins, shelves, etc. -- it's going to suck.
Let me be clear: if you're a DirecTV installer that has 3 appointments a day and all you have in the back is a spool of RG6, a ladder, few DTV boxes and a tool pouch -- fine. But if you're doing custom A/V, than you're going to have 12 different types of cables in 6 different lengths, along with routers, APs, remotes, saws, drills, tools, etc., etc., etc.
Again, running custom integration business out of a truck sucks. And on top of that you got a FORD?!?

I've got a cargo van and a f-150. Have also worked with a trailer. For me, it's cargo van or box van all the way. Working out of a truck or truck/trailer is more of a hassle no matter how you slice it.

I'm not going to agree at all.
I worked out of a van and it always ends up being a huge chore keeping it organized, walking around hunched over, hitting my head all the damn time, etc, etc.
My pick up was set up so everything was easily accessible. Three 8' long drawers were simple to pull out and each had it's own purpose.
Then on top of that was a full 4x8 shelf that also pulled out. Ladder and then various wires were kept on this.
With the tilting tonneau, I could actual reach most of the item on the top shelf as well.
With the back seat removed, there was pull out storage accessible from both sides, as well as a shelf (never seemed to need that shelf though.
Everything was dry and easily accessible.
Those of y'all claiming a van is better, have just never set a truck up properly.
Of course I also had a warehouse, and could easily stop by to pick up the items I might need on a job for the day.

There is no way, with any amount of drawers, you fit what you can fit in a properly organized van. And stoppin by a warehouse to pick up something ain't gonna happen here. Almost every job is a minimum 1 hour away. It gets packed the night before if it's not something that is typically stocked on the van. I have every bit of supplies and tools that you can fit in all those drawer and then some on my shelves. I have a 6 for ladder and a 4 foot ladder inside the van, neither touching the floor. The floor is completely open for gear. I have a 28' ladder on top of the van. Hell, all I did was remove my toolbag, and used my van to move almost all of our belongings in our move over the past week, keeping all of my supplies and other tools in the van. Sorry, but a pickup will never be anythinf but a secondary vehicle.
