Before I go any further, how did that wiring idea of several years ago pan out?

Go to this link he posted and it shows the minutes of a TIA/EIA meeting where his writings were unanimously rejected by the committee.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. I have a new item to proof for all of you. If you have any customers that desire to sever their ties with cable TV, I have a free spreadsheet that assists you in helping them to figure out how to get that done with today's various web services and devices, minus connected Blu-Ray players and TVs. Simply fill out the information using the instructions on each tab, and you will see how much money they waste on cable TV, what their bill SHOULD be according to their viewing habits, and what their billing CAN be if they use web services and OTA DTV instead. I left out pricing for the various devices in case either you are a dealer, or you experience different pricing for another reason in your market.

The link is here: CableCutter

After you fill in the information, go back through the tabs once again to see the results. I have yet to find anyone who uses more than 5% of their available cable TV programming, which means that cable is a >95% waste of money. Let me know if there are CONSTRUCTIVE improvements that can be made to this spreadsheet.

And if you want to know my formulas, buy my book instead. It's in the Amazon Kindle store.

I think that most of us here have already realized that cable and satellite is a huge waste of money. Many.. myself included.. have already cut the cord and i rely on a mix of iTunes and hulu.

IMO there is an audience for your book but its not in the Custom Installation Lounge. Everyone here is aware of the things you are aware of so you will get the "i already knew that" type answers. I think you already knew that though.

There is one single major issue that i have not been able to address and that your program wont address... How do i get HBO or AMC?

Tru Blood
Boardwalk Empire
Walking Dead
In treatment
Dexter
.........................dozens of other shows...

Cutting the cord means cutting access to these shows. And you can't even buy Tru Blood until the season is over. Because of this.. there will be those that IMO have already cut the cord or will soon and those who just cant let go of their handful of shows even if it means paying $100+ a month for the rest of that garbage that makes it on the air.

Moving forward imo.. they had better come up with a solution to getting exactly and only the content we want when we want it or bit torrent will be the content provider of choice.

I think Julie does a fine job as it is. Her post was a joke and an obvious one at that.

Westly, What do you have that Google, Amazon and the other giants don't?

Your idea is basic knowledge and the giants wanting to prosper from streaming are miles ahead of you on this.

Very interesting idea Wesley, indeed.

Welcome back.

I will attempt to dissect your spreadsheet at some point in the future where I have a bit more time. I am curious about your formulas, so I look forward to calculating those.

So lets ignore the flaws in Wesley's idea for a moment. Lets go with the fantasy that his sheet (which is a cluster f*** to navigate and make sense of) works.

The major flaw in this whole idea (besides the fact that the sheet is useless because of lack of content) is that online content is a PIA to use. Some content is available at netflix, some at Hulu, some at Vudu, iTunes has a lot but not all, all major networks have some of their shows on their sites, the list goes on. But the solution isnt user friendly. Not one piece of hardware can give you all sources. And even if you get all of the options, you cant get every movie or show. On top of that, most people dont want to deal with the hassle of trying to navigate a bunch of online services. Short of a BDP that gives a client access to Netflix, or maybe install an ATV I wouldnt consider integrating these services into their home at this time.

FYI HBO offers the ability to subscribe to their content for streaming through your browser. It is a monthly fee, and I don't remember how much it was.

I will have to say that I agree with Fins though... Even though I do it at home, I would never try to sell a customer on a browser based solution because of having to search all the different places for the content that you want. It can be a real pain. Our job is to make customers lives simpler, because most people are already scared of the systems we install because "they are so complex" in most customers words. When someone figures out a simple, reliable way to blend it all into one interface, I will change my opinion.

When channels and shows settle better, then I can maintain such a list.

That will happen about the same time that all the pigs will sprout wings and start flying around.

Right now, things have been changing a bit too much to maintain such.

Really? You've noticed that too?

Cable and Sat providers wont leave their channel lineups alone, but Wes thinks online content is going to stabilize.

What if you want real HD?

Yes, i can see some of the shows I watch via Hulu, but its not the same quality.

We don't have cable. We pay $65/mo for our Internet and $12/mo for Tivo Service. I use an off air antenna and get "basic" (pretty much just discovery, unless I got a crappy little box) cable included with my internet service.

I'm sure there would be shows on Cable that I would wathc, but I already feel like I waste too much time watching TV just with the major networks and Discovery.

I couldn't really get your form to work for me, but my situation may be sku'd since I don't really have cable.

Same here, OTA for network shows, anything else I want, I buy on BD when it comes out, If I miss an episode of a show i regularly watch and I forgot to record it, then I will try the internet, but for the most part the quality is not there so why bother.

"Quality" is the problem across the board. People have become so enamored with getting things bootlegged, free, or super cheap that the industry is starting to cater to them. Why offer it in HD when a majority of people are just fine watching it in 480i on their computer monitor.

It's like the crowd that wants to copy their rented DVDs over to VHS... or super compressed DVD copies and downloading over compressed music.

The reason I own all of this expensive A/V gear is because I want GREAT picture and sound. Unfortunately, in the real world, you have to pay for that.
