How? I have no serial under the battery cover despite
the device being brand new, so I can’t register and URC
pretty much refused to help me. I got the standard reply
to get in touch with the retailer. I am still waiting
for their response, but I have a feeling they are not
authorized.

It's located under the batteries themselves. You have to take out the batteries to see it. The serial number is on a white sticker measuring about 2.5 cm by 1 cm. (There is also a barcode on this sticker.)

Who was the retailer?

By the way, the following extract from a FAQ is still on URC's
website:

[...] Click on the gold satellite button located on the far
right of the Toolbar. If an update is available it will
proceed to download. [...]

The link is:

[Link: universalremote.com]

Worse yet, it also appears in what URC provides as the MXEditor Reference Manual. To our great surprise, we discovered that the software provided by URC had no gold satellite button!

As I said before, though, URC tech support provided the updateable software to us as a "courtesy" once they'd asked for and received from us the receipt showing that our institution had purchased from "B&H Photo, Video, and Pro Audio".

Unfortunately, by that time my technician had decided it was easier to just teach all the commands than to use their out-of-date IR database.

First, no policy discussion here. Period. That means YOU!

But I will chime in that B&H is a great place to purchase
professional equipment from, I've used them several times
to get stuff that I simply can't find locally. But they
really shouldn't still be carrying URC remotes if they're
not going to follow the new URC guidelines.

I just ordered a MX-950 from Amazon as well...I hope I'm taken care of with the software. I was set on Amazon because I had a large Gift Cert to use, so I emailed "Electronics Expo" and "Electronica Direct" (the two companies that actually sell the remotes via Amazon) about whether they were ADs and if I can get software from them. Only Elec Expo replied:

Hello

Yes we are an authorized dealer. You should be able to get software updates

from the website.

Thanks
expo

We'll see how this unfolds...i guess I'm expecting the worst. Still, I'm excited about my new (and 1st) Universal Remote!

Are you sure they're authorized?

I emailed URC and they confirmed that amazon is an authorized dealer. Not sure why its not on the site.

And again, I chose amazon because of a nice $200 Gift Cert (thanks Global Knowledge!). The MX-950 cost me $188 out of pocket.

Nothing against Tweeter - my local store has some really knowledgeable guys. It's why I bought my Denon AVR and Panny 50" plasma from them a few months ago.

Allright, I was never aware Amazon is authorized.

In that case, you must contact your seller and ask them to give you the software.

I went an purchased an MX-850 from a local Tweeter the other day. I got home and then discovered URC's wonderful policy. I went and called the salesman from tweeter to see if he could get me the updatable software. He had no idea about the policy and told me I should call URC tech support.
Anyway, this morning I called URC. After being sent back and forth between 4 people I finally got to one guy in tech support. First off, he was very rude. He basicly told me that customers can not get the updatable software at all, not even from authorized dealers. I had my web browser open looking at surfremote.com and told him that this website was selling the MX-850 and they were giving away the updatable software. He told me that was wrong and to give him the website and they would be shut down. I refused to give him the site name. After that things got ugly, I told him his policy was BS and he proceeded to hang up on me.
Anyway I returned the remote today, the guys are tweeter were very sympathetic and gave me a full refund.

I'm worried about what this URC guy said, according to him noone is allowed to have updatable software at all except installers. Would it be possible for URC to lock everyone out of updates in the future?

That's incorrect. Authorized dealers can give out the software.

Tweeter could give it out.

The URC guy was wrong.

I'd be willing to help but apparently I can't since you returned the remote.

OTAHD, are you in a position to let me have the details to get the latest software for my MX3000. I bought my remote in Tampa from a dealer, I think, I have asked many times for the software but I never get a reply. I live in the UK.

Thanks

I believe that OTAHD is correct, they can give you the updateable software, but they don't have to. URC leaves it up to the CI or AD to determine which software they provide.

And they can send you to URC's website to download the nonupdateable software, using the serial number that comes with the purchase of the remote from an authorized dealer. So, the retailer doesn't have to provide any software.

If you read his entire post, you'd see that he stated "but they don't have to."

I have used the SAT H20 codes (173) successfully with the new Directv HD DVR. Everything works finewith IR but will it not operate with my MRF-250 RF repeater unit. All my other components work fine with URC RF unit except the Directv box. Any ideas?
