I do not have a serial number on my MX-850. What now?
This new policy is quite surprising. I also own a MX-1000
(and mx-500). How am I supposed to get the software for
my 1000 as well?

Do you not have a serial number for your MX-1000, either?

I have that but it is not in the same format as what's requested on the registration page. It is really old (check out my join date). Looks more like a manufacture date. 001228 VER1.91 is the sticker under the battery cover. Probably manufactured on December 28, 2000. Besides, MX-1000 is not even available from the drop down.

EDIT: Nevermind on the MX-1000. They have the designer software on their website. I still need my MX-850 software though!

I am in the same prediciment as geodala. I bought a MX-800 almost 2 years ago (maybe more now). I still love the remote, but I just got new TV hardware and wanted to get the new updated codes for its use. I click on the live update and it won't connect anymore. This is a load of crap if you ask me, and I am sure as heck going to write their tech support and upper management one hell of an email about this situation.

Right, the old software won't update.

If you bought authorized, contact the dealer for the software.

And one suggestion...sometimes a nice, polite e-mail will yield better results than flaming.

What do you mean by "old software"? I bought the MX-850 from B&H Photo only two months ago. I was directed by the dealer to go to the manufacturer's web site to download the software. I did so, and the software was crippled in that it wasn't updatable. The software was what was provided to me by the manufacturer, as directed by the dealer.

If the software is "old" then why is the manufacturer making it available? Why don't they make the "new" software avaiable to their customers who bought their product from one of their authorized dealers?

If you bought authorized, contact the dealer for the software.

Can you, or anyone else, tell us who these dealers are? Shouldn't the manufacturer tell the customer up front that the updatable software is available from only some of their autorized dealers? The documentation provided by the dealer tells the customer that the software is updatable, and mentions nothing about having to obtain the updatable version for a subset of their authorized dealers.

And one suggestion...sometimes a nice, polite e-mail will
yield better results than flaming.

Of course it does. Nevetheless, the manufacturer's behavior is rather like the Soup Nazi who won't sell you his soup unless your behavior meets his standards. The Soup Nazi won't take your money and then refuse to serve you. This manufacture does take your money and then refuse to serve you.

They told me they'd send me the link to the updatable version of the software as a "courtesy".

B&H is responsible for providing the "new" software. I'm not sure if they do, but they should. I'd take that matter up with B&H.

Surf Remote, Pro Remotes, and Blue Do will give the "new" software.

The SW directly from URC is the "old" SW.

Any arguing should go in the really large thread in the other URC forum.

Why is B&H responsible for providing the updated software when URC provided the software that came to the consumer when he purchased the product?

Surf Remote, Pro Remotes, and Blue Do will give the "new"
software.

That would have been good to know BEFORE the product was purchased. It does the consumer no good to hear it AFTER he's purchased the product from someone else.

The SW directly from URC is the "old" SW.

Yes, it is. The question, though, is "WHY?" Why do they provide their customers with the old software?

Who's B&H Photo?

Are they installers of electronics?

Sadly, you can purchase URC products for dirt cheap prices.
Unfortunetly, at that price, it doesn't come with updateable software.

It would be nice if the seller would point that out!

Really?
Then I guess current software shouldn't be a problem!
Oh.. wait, they aren't a CI.
I'm confused.
Is it true that anyone can sell the remotes but only a certain few can offer the software???? Granted you can get the software anywere.

URC needs to figure out who their target market is and go with it.
I'm tiring of this whole 'debate'.

A 'dealer' has rules to follow; a 'retailer'(box mover) has no rules.....???

All I ever wanted was a great interface for clients that worked!!
URC provided that and I was greatfull.

The dedicated diy'rs could also purchase one and program it themselves, no problem.
I respect diy'rs. If I ever get out of this biz, I'll be one! And you can bet that I'll be searching the net for a cheaper price !;-)

There has to be a happy median here.

Unfortunately B&H doesn't give out the software either. Can't figure out why URC ever made them an AD.

I have an MX-700 (Ver.-1 about 3yrs old) and the serial
# is in the format 1202 Axxxxx and it told me that it's
an invalid MX-700 number.

I have an MX-700 V1.0 S/N 1202 A0wxyz.

URC Technical Support were very helpful when I asked how to download the programming software. I received an email response from them within an hour telling me to use the registration site with serial number K 120200 wxyz00.
