Found codes to run the receiver but it won't power on or off even if I try to learn the original remotes On/Off button. What's up with that?

That's odd. The RX-V1400 uses the standard Yamaha IR signals that have been in use for a long time. Yamaha uses the NEC1 protocol, and Power toggle is device 122, function 31. Very similar to e.g. volume +/- which is 122, function 26/27. Discrete On/Off is 122, 29/30.

It also has extended IR commands, and discrete Power On/Off is device 126, function 126/127. i wouldn't expect the Sony remote to have the device 126 programmed in, but all of these 122 or 126 commands should be learnable.

Is Power the only problem or are other buttons not working? Any buttons which work part of the time?

Nope, just the power. Also, I don't know what your three digit numbers above mean or what to do with them.

The point is that Power toggle is an IR signal which is very similar to the other IR signals. If the Sony can learn, say, volume and have it work, but can't learn power even though it works with the original remote, then I guess the Sony is probably defective.

If the built in code doesn't work, but learned signals do, then I would suspect that the Yamaha remote/receiver might be setup to control Zone 2.

Or the programmers a dork!

I just realized that I had indeed programmed the power on button to... power on! But because I had the unit on already it wasn't turnong off, of course, because that would require a second button which I've since programmed. So, in a nut shell, I have the Power On button programmed for ON and another button programmed for OFF. Wish the Powr On button could perform ON and OFF but, like the original remote, two buttons are required.

Thanks for the help!

I don't know anything about the VL610, or how one describes functions to it. But the Yamaha RX-V1400 accepts both discrete On and Off commands, and also a Power toggle command.

Discrete On is NEC1, device 122, function 29
Discrete Off is NEC1, device 122, function 30
Power Toggle is NEC1, device 122, function 31

We can turn those into Pronto Hex format if that is what is needed. How does one describe different functions to the VL610?

Took it a step further and can now turn the tv, amp and sat on w/ the extended push of the "TV" button. Can power it all off w/ the single push of the "1" button at the far bottom left.

Would be nice if those same units could be turned on and off w/ the one "TV" button though.

Any ideas?

The VL610 does not have any way to accept specific code like most URC/RCA remotes. So when I needed to program discrete ON/OFF for Sharp Aquos TV, I've had to use the URC-8820N to program these codes and teach them to the VL610.

I think for bobcat to program the TV button to turn on/off all devices, the Power toggle must be taught to the VL610 somehow. It sounds like because of Yamaha remote only has Power discrete ON/OFF, the VL610 database did not provide Power toggle, so we'll have to teach it using a different remote such as URC or RCA remotes.

EDIT: See 3FG's post below for clarification regarding OFA and RCA remotes that accept advanced codes for individual buttons.

That nomenclature "URC/RCA" may be confusing. The remotes that can accept programming of individual buttons are made by Universal Electronics, Inc and not by the company named URC (which makes the R50, etc.) Also, "most" RCA remotes aren't made by UEI, and can't program individual buttons. All OneForAll brand remotes are made by UEI, and have names like OneForAll URC-8820.

The RCA remote available today that can have individual functions programmed is the RCA-RCRP05B. And the OneForAll URC-8820N mentioned by bodhi78_rc can also do the job.

Sooo... the setup I stated in post 7 above is the best I can achieve w/ this remote (Sony RM-VL610)?
