The 620 learn function doesn't work at all if the instructions are followed using the manual.
I had ordered the 600 from bestbuy and they sent me the 620 instead.
Without the learning function the 620 is useless.

I found this same issue on 6 different remotes from separate stores and cities. I was wondering if they had made a bad batch after searching the internet or had bad instructions. I returned 4 remotes to Sony and worked with them on resolving the problem, their advanced solutions department. They did send me new ones but the learning problem persisted.

I began working to resolve it myself and discovered the only common characteristic shared by all the remotes and in all learning situations- was the use of rechargable batteries. I did use new bateries per the instructions and fully charged batteries, but I had seen on the internet where folks had issues with weak batteries.

I discovered that if you program the remote with the codes- it works with either type of battery. If you use it to operate anything- it works with either type of battery. However, the individual buttons can only be programed via the learning function provided by Sony- this individual learning can only be done with non rechargable batteries. I guess this is due to the different voltage between the two types of batteries.

I was able to fully program it on "regular" non rechargeable batteries- and 6 other remotes since then. But each time I tested this and tried to let the individual button learning function work on rechargeable batteries- I could always duplicate the error- or get rid of it by going back to non rechargable ones.

With the learning finished, they operate fine on rechargable batteries. They are good remotes and I would recommend them! It would be nice if Sony could fix this or get the information out... The instructions only say to use new batteries, not new non rechargable ones. I do not think they were even aware of this till I worked with them.

Gary ...

I can confirm the return to the previously selected device after macro completion.
And I was wondering if you found a work around for this.
Because as is, it makes my macro work pretty useless.

Thanks for any update.

THANK YOU for figuring out the need for non-rechargeables for the learn function! This was driving me nuts!

Ahhh - that's probably why I was never able to duplicate this. I always use alkaline batteries.

That might have been problem for some, but I never used rechargable batteries in remotes. I had a vlz620 that would learn with no problem. But I had one that would not let you finish the learning function, so the remote never had a chance to learn a command. It was simply a broken remote, no excuses needed.

Please reply if you find something different than the above described behaviour or if you have found a way to make it work like the VL600 does. Thanks, Gary

Hi all,

Yes the System Control change from the RM-VL600 to the RM-VLZ620 is deliberate.

I reckon when my second RM-VLZ620 arrives later this month, that it will function the same way.

It did have me wondering for a while what was happening, compared to the RM-VL600 as it was convenient to just press 1~4 for the AMP and Device we wanted to use.

I have worked around it 'their way' and programming the macro into the Device Select button, so if we move to the Sony PVR then the AMP is sent an input switch and we have the keypad matrix for the PVR.

Similarly, the only other device we use is the Satellite receiver, again, the Device Select button for SAT has a macro to move the AMP input to that device and we again have the keypad matrix to work the Satellite receiver.

I found programming required deliberate key sequences and any variation (as written in the manual) would see the RM-VLZ620 end learning mode and revert to command mode. For example, using the wrong key would end the session, once that is mastered, it is only necessary to have a very small pause between inputs, no need for extra long button presses, just a gap so that the processor in the remote had time to register the key stroke.

Finally to access the macro in the Device Select button, it (the button) must be pressed for two seconds, prior to that it just functions to enable the keypad matrix for the device eg; DVR --> press once and control the DVR, or press it for two seconds or more and the AMP is enabled to run audio and feed the video to the tv - excellent!

There is a Strong HD Satellite box on its way, so it will be interesting to see if it can control it, as the RM-VL600 couldn't cope with any of the codes in my last Strong STB, here's hoping.

It is a nice remote and a big improvement on the RM-VL600, now to teach everyone else the new machine, better make one of those colour A4 cheat sheets with key labels to leave around the living room!

I had bought a refurb unit a year ago and couldn't get the learning to work. I then bought a new one this week and had the same issue. Was about to return it but then read all the instructions including the troubleshooting. It made mention to not do this by a plasma tv or flourescent lighting. I turned off all flourescent lighting, including CFL, and went to a room with a normal bulb. I had much more success.

I also have a Yamaha receiver. Found out that codes 80376 and 81276. 80376 provides a discrete power on (AMP -> Power) and 81276 provides a discrete powerr off (AMP -> Power). So I went with 81276 and then "learned" the scene buttons to AMP1 and AMP2.

Still working through logistics before moving away from the VL600.

Ok the system control buttons do not return to the last device in use but, instead, device-specific macros can be set on the Device Select buttons, held for >2secs.

While a single command cannot be set at the same time for a short button press, for our set up with Pana G20 Tv we only need to use five DS buttons for changing the TV's input for five devices with five discrete commands. (These are not present on the TV's original remote or in the VLZ built-in database, but learned from another universal remote). This leaves a spare DSB in the second row beneath the three main device buttons: (BD) for TV, (VCR) for SAT, and (CD) for DVR. (Except for TV, the DSBs can be set with any type of device code from the built in database.)

These 'spares' can act to issue macros, such as those which might be missed compared to RM-VL610, which do leave the remote in the corresponding TV, SAT, or PVR device mode.

We have set each of the numeric buttons of the same three main Devices to issue several digits, comprising digital-type FAV channel numbers, so a short press of one of the matching lower-row DSBs usefully gives access to the device's normal numeric keys and a full set of alternative buttons, while a >2sec press issues a macro.

e.g. beneath the 'TV' DSB a 2sec press of 'BD' issues the commands:-
CursorUp+ CursorRight+ Enter(delay0.3secs)x5+ CursorRightx3+ Enter

- while watching Tv, then pressing the red button and Enter, the 2sec press of 'BD' DSB gets to BBCiPlayer quite smartly, and incidentally sets up the alternative normal number keys etc. to enable selection of letters for a search and generally to navigate within the iPlayer and to use all the other TV commands.

Consecutive commands/macros set for the non-device-specific System Control Buttons are used either for standby power toggles and/or a learned command for a Lime mains on/off IR plug for the TV and Pana SC-BTT370 Home Theatre.

The green TV power button is usefully non-device-specific too, and seems to be able to issue the required stream of power commands for getting the TV out of standby, and 'Sleep' is used for a Lime plug for a EX-85 DVD recorder (otherwise using menu> remote control set to '2' to avoid interfering with BTT-370).

The button layout and markings have been greatly improved so reckon this is nicer to use than RM-VL610.

I was really hoping for a solution for the system control buttons not switching to the appropriate device mode on the remote. I have that same problem, and it's going to be a big pain. I'm converting from a rm-vlz600 that's just worn out after years of use. The system control buttons on that let me switch the device mode of the remote, so the 620 lacking this is a step backward.

I guess I'll have to program the device select buttons to do the switch. But having to hold the button for two second is sort of a pain. Otherwise I really like the remote.

Just bought this remote and cannot find a solution to my problem. How do you input digital channels (ie. 26.1)? Have Toshiba TV that inputs as 26-001.

Thanks

My 7yr old RM-VL600 remote started to fail recently. I couldn't fine a new sony remote, so I initially replaced it with a Logitech Harmony 650...which was easy to set up, has nice backlighting...and that's about all I find good about it. I tried to like it for over a month, but in the end I hated it.

So, I went looking for a new Sony...couldn't find one. does anyone know have sony discontinued their line of universal remotes ?

In the end I purchased a "bulk new" one from a china ebay seller - an RM-VLZ620. I'm very pleased with it, as I was with my RM-VL600. I did initially have the learning problem described above, and I accidently found the same solution i.e swapping my re-chargables for alkalines. re-chargables work fine once programmed.

Like its predecessor it has lots of memory, so it was able to learn all of my remotes - even the remote control dimmer switch and a nobrand MX2 box work fine. and again, like its predecessor, my only minor complaints are no backlighting, and 3 of the device buttons labeled for optical players - BD, DVD, and CD - which in my house are all covered by the same thing.
