I had bought a refurb unit a year ago and couldn't get the learning to work. I then bought a new one this week and had the same issue. Was about to return it but then read all the instructions including the troubleshooting. It made mention to not do this by a plasma tv or flourescent lighting. I turned off all flourescent lighting, including CFL, and went to a room with a normal bulb. I had much more success.
I also have a Yamaha receiver. Found out that codes 80376 and 81276. 80376 provides a discrete power on (AMP -> Power) and 81276 provides a discrete powerr off (AMP -> Power). So I went with 81276 and then "learned" the scene buttons to AMP1 and AMP2.
Still working through logistics before moving away from the VL600.
