I converted the STR-G3 to IR control since I don't have the orginal RF "egg" remote... I bought a Sony RM-VL700 remote.... I can turn the STR-G3 on/off, control volume, mute, switch Video 1,2, CD, MD..etc.. Whwn I push "4" to get Tuner I can't Tune the receiver manualy, only change the Presets A, B, & C..... Am I missing something?? I have the manual but don't see how to tune in my favorites... Can you help me? Many Thanks, Bob Mansker [email protected]

Now that you mention it, my Onkyo works the same way. I can't manually tune from the remote either; just from the receiver. And I haven't found any discrete codes for it. I guess we are both in the same boat, having to go to the receiver to manually tune stations.

Well then I have a big problem, can't tune the receiver on the front panel.... Why would Sony do a design with no front panel tuning, only presets..????

I finally found the manual for your STR-G3 receiver, and it is a doozy. It looks to me like the remote works like a computer mouse on the tv screen display. Also interesting is that the remote is RF, but the receiver will emit IR signals to control other components. Wow! Edit 19Mar2008-Just got an email request for the manual and looked up this thread and reailized I never posted the link, so here it is. [Link: 129.33.22.12]Can you get the on-screen menu display when you use your 700? It looks like the display is the only way to set things up with this receiver. After I wrote this I read further in the manual, and I don’t think you can get the display. but it doesn’t matter because even if you could, without the original remote there is no way to move the pointer and click on it. It looks like without this display you have minimal control over your receiver. Without the original remote it doesn't look like you can make a lot of changes to what is already there. Kind of like trying to operate a computer without a mouse or keyboard. I have written the above based on what I have read in the manual without actually having the equipment, so if I have guessed wrong, let me know.

If the receiver responds to the preset up & down, which is the only tuner commands in the vl700, then it would probably respond to Scanning up & down commands. What you need is another remote that has the Scan commands to teach the VL700, one-for-all/radio shack remote would do. Check your local RS for 15-2103, Under $10. The setup code is AUX0158, the advanced codes are Scan Up-072, Scan Down-068.

edmund-I am not familiar with Sony receivers, but won't Scan commands only scan the presets already assigned? If that is the way it works, I would think you need a Seek command to find the next tunable station. I didn't see any Seek discretes in the 0158 listing.
If he could get the on-screen display, there is a way to switch between Manual-for manual station selection, and Automatic tune modes, but he can't get that display.

Thanks for all the input..... I bought 2 of these receivers for $25 apiece at a thrift store so I can spend a little on them.... If I had one of the RF remotes I could set the presets & be OK... I will go by my Radio Shack & see if they have the remote you mentioned.... Bought a couple of Sansui SP-2500S speakers for $15 at the same thrift store... They have a 12 inch Woofer, 2-5 inch mid-range & 2- horn tweeters... They sound great.... Thanks again... Bob

Ron, the Scan commands search for the next frequency, or static.

edmund-thanks. My Onkyo doesn't have scan, and there are no discretes for it either, so I wasn't sure what it would do.

Edmund, Can you explain in detail how to program the "Scan-Up-072" & "Scan-Down-068" on the Radio Shack 15-2103 remote.... I got the RS remote & did the AUX0158 with no problems but got lost on your other instructions... Thanks.. Bob

Sure, 1. press Aux 2. press and hold P for two blinks 3. enter 9-9-4 4. press P for one blink 5. enter advanced code(EFC) 6. pick a key to map it to, some keys won't take an EFC. Other EFC's are here.

EFC is another name for advanced code, which codes 068 & 072 are, so where you see EFC, substitute either 068 or 072.
