First of all, this remote is awesome! It has done everything I bought it for until this point.

It has a preset code for my Yamaha receiver, and it gets it to work (Power, and *some* functions)

However, my receiver remote has buttons that are dual function. For example, you press "input" and then select the corresponding button on the remote. Now, you press another button, and it toggles the secondary mode of the input buttons' features (sound modes, % channel stereo, DTS surround, etc..)

I tried the learning function where you can learn 4 functions on one button, but once I execute the new learned button, it locks up my remote to the point where I have to take the batteries out to reset it.

It won't program the "input" button, or the "shift" button.

Any ideas? Perhaps I am going about it the wrong way?

Thanks

I apologize...I took for granted that I was talking about the RM-AV3100 - Since there a lot of posts about this remote.

So, yes it is the RM-AV3100, and the receiver in question is the Yamaha RV-620.

You sure the "input" just isn't another form of "shift"? Ie. try ONLY capturing the final code.

If I understood you correctly, you mean final code as in after input on my receiver's remote is pressed? Yes, it will learn the function of the button that get's pressed after pressing the input button on my receiver's remote.

The problem is, that I need to also enable the effect of the "shift" (on the yamaha remote it's called DSP) button.

The sequence of events is: Press Input->"desired input. then press DSP/"Shift"-> desired sound mode. Typically, these occupy the same button on my receiver's remote. Learning 2 on the RM-AV3100 doesn't work either.

The problem is, I can't learn the input and shift keys. It beeps 5 NG's at me.

What I'm saying is that there likely aren't any codes assigned to "Input" or "Shift".

For example:

Press BUTTON A - get normal COMMAND A.
Press Input - get nothing.
Press BUTTON A again - get "second level" COMMAND B.
Press DSP - get nothing.
Press BUTTON A yet again - get "third level" COMMAND C.

Of course, that means the number of keys on the remote is doubled or tripled from what you were hoping for...

Hmm, ok so your thinking I should program each key with the corresponding number of options it has? For example, if my Receiver remote's input button is DVD, and DVD has also has DTS surround and Dolby surround modes associated with it, I would need to learn all three. Then, cycle through them on the Sony remote to get the desired function?

Interesting....I thought I tried that butmaybe not. I'll give it a shot.

Silly me, I kept reading that as RV-670, not RV-620. I see the issue now, as Ron mentions my earlier post should cover it.

anim8tr,

Does the original Yamaha remote have a wheel on top? If so, you should see 2 modes for the receiver: AMP/TUN and DSP/TUN. With the wheel in AMP/TUN mode, the "number" keys select the input; in DSP/TUN mode, the numbers change the DSP settings. The DSP and Input buttons at the top of the remote temporarily change the mode of the remote for about three seconds without having to rotate the wheel. DSP and Input do not send out any codes on their own so there is no point in trying to learn them.

I have a Yamaha reveiver and an RM-AV3000. I set the original remote to DSP/TUN and learned the DSP keys to the number buttons on the left. I then put the original remote into AMP/TUN mode and learned Input keys to the input buttons on the right.

IMPORTANT TIP: Make sure you PRESS AND HOLD the buttons on the original Yamaha remote when learning to the Sony. Although a single tap may seem to learn okay, the button probably won't work when you use it in a macro.

You've already noticed that some keys cause the receiver to "cycle though" functions - that state is kept on the receiver, not on the remote, so you only have to learn that key once.

Hope this helps...

Greg

Here is the manual for the RV-620. It has an input key as anim8tr stated. Daniel's reply #6 should get him pointed in the right direction. [Link: yamaha.com]

Wow! Thanks guys.

Yes, Yamaha does design weird remotes, lol.

Thanks g.n. darn fine suggestion. Yep, my remote has exactly that setup. Your post taught me some things I didn't know! I.e, the input and DSP buttons allow for temporary change but is the wheel that take command, doh!

Instead of using the number pad, I may use the labels down on the bottom, as if I can remember correctly, those can be renamed?

I am gonna try this setup tonight! Thanks again.

Well, I knew you could rename the labels, but I only see 4? is there a way to access more?

I am referring to the labels on the touchpad at the bottom, not the component labels you get by selecting "other"
