I have noticed that most people are talking of using either Sony or RCA products for their DSS systems. Is Hughes compatible, better, worse, or what?

hi guys......am a mid to hi end hme thtre and residential & comm satellite dealer near boston.. ...been doing a/v for over 20 yrs+.....here'e the scoop on DSS systems...rca 5451 very good.....sony sat-a4, a smidgen better, but i cant see the difference, so maybe it aint better: havent seen any a50's yet cause they aint shipping any cept to the mass marketers, ....and lastly the Hughes; the old product line was also very good, but lacked all the options and goodies that the hi-end rca's and sony's have......but the new Platnum line, the E series, and the E-45 specifically, is probably THE BEST OUT THERE: problem is , they again arent shipping them... ....still shipping the old D series receivers.... ....but should be available at or just after xmas .........out of all the higher end product out there, HUGHES consistantly has product available on a week in week out basis.......pertaining to the audio and video....they ALL broadcast digital audio and video, but i find a very insig- nificant difference in the video , favoring the sony sat-a4....although they all are supposed to be the same.......the conjecture now is that the hughes #hird E-45, is supposed to be the very best....even better than the sony sat-a4, and a50 ...........Hmmmmmm we shall see as time progresses....as far as the audio, i hear no difference in stereo mode , or in dolby ac-3 between any of them.....ohhhhhhhhh well, anyone need any product????????....merry xmas , all.... ooops, also....hughes had, and still has a digital VHS unit, D-vhs, avilable to the public.. ...which functions transparently with their satellite receivers......probably as good as if not better than s-vhs which has been around for years.....meaning that u can tape/duplicate directly from your satellite rcvr a digital input signal onto tape.....hmmmmmm, i wonder how that picture looks and works..hmmmmmmmmmmmm ......oh, well , if anyone has any input, please lemme know billy c northeast satcomm performance audio/ video everett ma 02149 617 394-0281

I have a Hughes Platinum HIRD-45 Dolby Digital receiver with HDR-205 DVHS recorder as my primary DSS, and a Sony SAT-3 as my 2nd receiver. The Hughes has a better user interface at the expense of being a little slower than the Sony, which is fine as it's still responsive enough and gives me a better guide, setup, etc. The DVHS recorder records 5 hours of program in the same quality as the original, including Dolby Digital. I love the set-up.

DVHS with the HDR-205: - Only from DSS, as it records and plays back the DSS bitstream through the DSS receiver. - SVHS tapes OK, but may have a dropout or two. - Quality is same as original, i.e. no degradation (unless you get dropouts from defective tapes, of course). - Tape duration same as if recorded in EP, I believe. A DVHS tape is 5 hours. A T160 is around 4+ hours. In other words, short of recording the DSS bitstream into a harddrive, which would require far more storage than currently available in Replay or TiVO, it can't get any better. DJ

I am getting the HEX codes for Hughes DSS systems emailed to me today by an engineer at Hughes Network Systems. I will post what I get later (today/this week) when they arrive and i've tried a few. I also have been amazed at the lack of "energy" related to Hughes systems! Considering the prices they have/are sold at, I expected more chatter online about them. (Gosh $49 for a system?--amazing) I'm going to use the Hughes codes to customize my RS15-1994 Universal Remote (6 in 1) Mike

The following should generate some interest in Hughes: Hughes Network Systems Announces DIRECTV PLUS(TM) High Definition Set-Top Receiver New 'Platinum HD' Model Receives Both DIRECTV High-Definition and Standard Broadcasts as well as Off-Air Digital Television LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Network Systems (HNS) and its sister company DIRECTV, Inc. today announced that HNS will manufacture a DIRECTV PLUS(TM) System set-top receiver designed to receive high definition DIRECTV(R) programming, as well as high definition, digital "over-the-air" signals from local broadcasters via off-air antennae. The new "Platinum HD" receiver is planned for shipment in the second quarter of this year and will be among the first high-definition compatible systems to feature the DIRECTV Advanced Program Guide. The new receiver is also fully compatible with the DirecDuo(TM) antenna system. "The Platinum HD further expands our broad line of products to support the high definition generation of programming," said Paul Gaske, senior vice president and general manager of Hughes Network Systems Broadcast Products & Services Division. "With this receiver, consumers will be able to receive DIRECTV's standard definition and HDTV programming as well as local high definition broadcasts -- and view all available channels seamlessly using DIRECTV's Advanced Program Guide. "The HNS receiver includes the most widely adopted video output component for high definition -- YPrPb -- enabling it to work with most brands in the market," said Gaske. "Best of all, consumers can also use the product with their standard definition televisions to receive an improved picture -- the "Platinum HD" set-top box converts off-air high definition broadcasts into a 480i standard definition digital format," he added. "We're proud to have our sister company add to the increasing selection of HDTV-compatible DIRECTV System products available to consumers," said Bill Casamo, executive vice president for DIRECTV. "The Platinum HD product offers our customers yet another option for their DIRECTV home entertainment." Features of the "Platinum HD" set-top box include: * Reception capabilities for DIRECTV high-definition and standard definition digital-quality programming (all 18 off-air high-definition broadcasts [ATSC]) * Reception capabilities for off-air standard definition broadcasts (NTSC) via an internal tuner * Ability to convert picture from standard to high-definition format, and vice versa. (Reception capability for 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i formats.) * DIRECTV Advanced Program Guide, which provides customers with a single guide for both DIRECTV high- and standard-definition digital broadcasts. * Ability to present standard definition (4 x 3 format) on a 16 x 9 TV screen, with either gray side bars (full picture in less-than-full screen), or with the top and bottom of the picture automatically cropped (less-than-full picture in a full screen). * All features offered with the fifth-generation Platinum (standard definition) product, including: Dolby Digital audio, RF remote control, StarSight(R) One-Button Record, and all HNS-exclusive DIRECTV System features. Additionally, the receivers enable consumers to receive the DirecDuo service, providing high-speed Internet access from DirecPC(R) as well as DIRECTV programming. An external DirecPC satellite modem and a PC running Windows 98 are required to receive DirecPC service. The Platinum HD product will be on display at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, at DIRECTV Booth 5611 and HNS Booth 6225.
