The lastest is  the NAB has asked the FCC to adopt rules allowing television stations to begin broadcast transmissions in ATSC 3.0.

NCTA tells the FCC that any new rules should not require cable systems to carry 3.0 signals during the transition from the current DTV system to 3.0. The trade group also says systems should not be burdened with new carriage obligations or costs and the host station should be required to broadcast in HD.

Here's another problem ATSC 3.0 presents, this one for (small) cable operators.

This is one of 20 standards expected to be part of the final ATSC 3.0 suite of standards by early next year, all of which have to be approved by the FCC.

"These Proposed and Candidate Standards will include Video and Audio Compression, high dynamic range, wide color gamut and immersive sound, closed captioning, advanced emergency alerting, security, companion devices, personalization, applications and interactivity, watermarking and fingerprinting, and Internet Protocol delivery."

Two questions about the new ATSC 3.0 technology remain:
(1) when will the new television sets be on the market (in the U.S)?, and
(2) will there be converter boxes available for existing sets?

I posed these two questions to the ATSC in Washington and received this reply:

I don’t know when complete ATSC 3.0 TVs will be available but in all likelihood it will be sometime in 2018 considering the complete standard will not be finished until 2017. As far converter boxes are concerned I see something more along the lines of a dongle that will plug directly into an HDMI port or a home tuner/router that will distribute the signal to devices around the home.

Hope this helps...
